Two stories are told, interwoven. One is of Jaka's strict upbringing at the hands of Nurse. As she matures and starts to bend the rules, she comes into her own... despite a few painful experiences along the way. The other story tells of Cerebus arriving by chance into the tiny mountain-side neighborhood where Jaka and her husband have cut out their lives. The story takes a sharp turn when Cirinist soldiers sweep into town, killing some, imprisoning the rest. Cerebus, who was down in the city at the time, returns to find out he is too late to help.

- See Cerebus 0. "A fortnight or so has passed [since Cerebus #75]". Immediately after Cerebus has been returned to Iest. He tours the former papal residence and finds himself alone and empty. One point appears to be a suicide attempt which Cerebus thankfully gets frightened out of. Cerebus leaves the area, on the way to the rest of his life.
