Choosing a Caterer

Many couples prefer to have their wedding reception at a private house, garden setting, historic house, hall or surf club. The catering for this style of reception can vary from having a couple of people in the kitchen making sandwiches and hors d'oeuvres, or food preparation and delivery only, to a full service caterer providing uniformed staff, full bar facilities, party hire equipment and co-ordination of your entire reception from.

You may choose to put your mother or other relatives in charge of the kitchen, but this will limit their enjoyment of the wedding and despite all good intentions the food and service may not meet your expectations. A caterer who is experienced in weddings is your best option, and there is a wide variety of caterers available to meet all budgets no matter how big or small.

Style of Reception

Before choosing a caterer you will need to have an idea of how you want the food to be served. The options vary from a sit-down menu, to a buffet, banquet or finger food.

A sit-down menu is generally considered appropriate for a formal style wedding reception. Buffet style is more suitable for less formal receptions and has the advantage of being less expensive and ideally suited for a relaxed morning or afternoon reception.

After deciding on your preferred style of food service for your reception, determine your budget limitations and approximate number of guests. Armed with this information approach several caterers in your area and see what deals and packages they can offer.

However, before making a final decision on your choice of caterer there are several questions you need ask. For more information, click here.
