One factor that than the situations at the points table that makes the league interesting is the rivalries at play in the competition. There are two major rivalries in the Big Bash league - one is between the two sides based out of Sydney and the other one is between the two sides based out of Melbourne. This derby gets even more exciting when both sides in question are doing well.
We are set to witness one of these derby matches right after the Christmas break with Sydney Sixers taking on Sydney Thunder in an important context in context of the standings on the ladder. The match between the two sides is to be played at the Sydney Showground Stadium, Sydney on 26th January 2021.
Sydney Sixers got off to a flying start to the tournament as they defeated Brisbane Heat by a massive margin of seven wickets in what was only the second match of the tournament. However, they failed to keep that momentum up as they then lost the next two matches, both against the Stars, owing to a poor outing with the bat in both those matches. However, in their most-recent game, which was also against the Heat, Thunder found their rhythm back as they defeated their familiar foes by a humongous margin of 53 runs.
As it currently stands, Sydney Thunder are placed at the fourth spot on the ladder with two wins and two losses, aggregating to 9 points. Coupled with that, they have a terrific net run rate of 0.596, which might come in handy when the race to the knockouts gets tighter towards the end of the league stage.
Featuring a rather inexperienced top-order, batting has been the Achilles heel for the Thunder and they would want to get some consistency at the top. Having said that, the fact that they just managed to get that right in their previous match should boost their confidence. Matthew Gilkes, Alex Hales, Jason Sangha, and Sam Billings each contributed well with the bat in the previous match and that was the primary reason that the Thunder managed to put 196 runs on the board.
With the ball, however, Thunder have been a lot more confident, largely because of their frontline spinner, Tanveer Sangha, who has found himself amongst the wickets more often than not. Overall, Sydney Thunder have a side that is rich with talent, but lacks experience with the bat. If their batsmen are able to contribute well at the top, Sydney Thunder would always present a tough challenge, especially with the kind of bowling unit they have.

Just a glance at the points table is enough to gauge how good the Sixers have been in the tournament so far. They are five matches into the competition and have experienced only one unfavorable result. Also, coupled with the 14 points they have, they also have a net run rate of 1.415, which anyway is likely to be inconsequential hereon, provided they are able to continue to play as they have.
Placed at the second spot of the table already, Sydney Sixers will have to do a drastic job from here to not qualify for the playoffs. They have been ruthless in the competition with their batting and bowling both contributing consistently and would want to continue performing in a similar manner.
The only match that the Sixers lost happened a couple of games ago as Matthew Wade and D'Arcy Short combined to string together a solid partnership, batting the Sixers out of the match in the process. With two back to back wins thereafter, the Sixers found their way back to the winning ways and will now be brimming with confidence.
To add to their already strong unit, the Sixers have now roped in Shadab Khan, who will add to their already strong spin department. The major factor that has worked so well for the Sixers so far has been their top-order, which has scored runs more often than not. Josh Phillipe has been in excellent touch and the Sixers would want him to come good here too. All in all, Sixers have an immaculately balanced side and the results show that. If they are able to replicate that on-paper strength on the field in the upcoming match as well, they will be a tough side to get past.

This is a frequently used ground in Sydney and there is likely to be a lot of uncertainty about the nature of the surface. Historically though, this venue has rarely produced high-scoring matches and we expect something similar to be the case here as well. Surface is likely to get slower as the match progresses and considering that, we expect the captain winning the toss to bat first.

Sydney Showground Stadium features a surface, which is a lot different to what is there at Sydney Cricket Ground and both sides will have to adapt quickly to that. Besides, the dimensions of the boundaries are different too. We expect spinners to come into picture big time here and scoring runs in the second innings is not going to be easy. Also, the powerplay is going to be the best time to bat and we expect both sides to come out all guns blazing in the first four overs. Team batting first should be fairly happy if they manage to score a total of at least 150 runs here.

This is an important match for both these sides not only because this is a derby match, but also the impact this match may have on the standings of the two sides on the ladder. Both sides are coming off fantastic wins in their respective matches and should be brimming with confidence. Comparing the two sides on paper and on the basis of recent form, Sydney Sixers do appear to be slightly ahead. Also, they have an experienced unit and that will certainly add to their advantage in crunch situations. For that and the other reasons stated above, we will be placing our money on a Sydney Sixers win and so should you.
Josh Phillipe has undoubtedly been the stand-out batsmen for the Sixers and is also one of the major reasons for Sixers' terrific performance thus far. He bats at the top of the order and has ample opportunity to get set and then go for the big ones. Considering that and the form he has been in, bet on Phillipe to be the top-scorer of the day for Sydney Sixers.
Sydney Thunder may have a fragile batting at the top, their bowling appears to be top-notch, especially at this surface. One of the main pillars of their bowling is Tanveer Sangha, who has done a terrific job in the season up until now. With the surface here likely to assist spinners, he will have a massive role to play against Sixers in the upcoming match. For that reason, we will also be betting on Tanveer Sangha to be the best bowler of the match for Thunder.
