The points table in Big Bash League 2021 is really skewed towards the top four sides and the teams placed in the bottom half of the ladder have a lot of work to do if they want to catch up with the teams placed at the top. We are just about approaching the mid-point of the competition and the next few matches are going to be of vital significance for all the sides.
Up next in the competition, we are going to see the table-toppers lock horns with the bottom-dwellers in what could prove to be a contest lot closer than it looks from the outside. This upcoming match between Perth Scorchers and Melbourne Renegades is to be played at the Docklands Stadium, Melbourne on 26th December 2021.
Perth Scorchers have undoubtedly been the team of the season so far and their position on the ladder clearly reflects that. Not only are they placed at the top of the table, they have been utterly dominant and their net run rate is a strong enough evidence of that. Another win here will push them an inch closer to a knockout spot and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.
As it currently stands, Perth Scorchers are placed at the top of the ladder with five wins from five matches, aggregating to 17 points. Besides, they have a terrific net run rate of 1.710, which can come in handy if things get tight towards the end of the league stage.
Perth Scorchers have not only managed to register wins in all of their matches, they have done so with remarkable ease. We have seen almost everyone contributing for them one way or the other and that has been the reason that they are placed so comfortably at the top. In the last match as well, their batsmen failed to get them off to a good start, but their middle-order batsmen in Mitchell Marsh, Ashton Turner, and Laurie Evans played valuable knocks to take them to a mammoth total.
They were a bit more expensive with the ball than they otherwise had been in the tournament thus far, but they wouldn't really mind that as that was more of a one-off occasion and the surface too had almost nothing for the bowlers.
On paper, Perth Scorchers have an immaculately balanced side and that is apparent by the performances they have put. They are loaded with match winners in both departments of the game and bat deep with multiple versatile all-rounders available. All in all, the Scorchers have almost everything going for them at the moment and will be brimming with confidence. They have a superb team on-paper and if they are able to play to their potential, getting past them will be incredibly difficult.

Melbourne Renegades had a terrible run last year and they have not apparently improved this year either. In the four matches they have played, they have appeared to be dealing with the same sort of problems they were dealing with in the last season and will need to do something special going into their next few matches. Given that they have played just four matches thus far, they still have things under their control and a win here could prove to be of vital importance to their campaign.
As it currently stands, Melbourne Renegades are placed at the bottom of the points table with just one win from a total of four matches played. Added to that, they have a poor net run rate of -1.196, which is the second-worst amongst all teams in the competition. The only win that they registered came in their first match as they defeated Adelaide Strikers by the barest of margin of two runs.
Post that win, however, the Renegades have been dismal - losing all their three matches quite comprehensively. More recently, they are coming off a 21-run defeat at the hands of Perth Scorchers, who are also the team they are going to face up next. Bowling first, the Renegades' bowlers were all over the place, allowing the Scorchers to post a mammoth total of 206. Although they did do well in their response with Aaron Finch contributing with a remarkable fifty, it just wasn't enough.
On paper, Melbourne Renegades have a decent side, but they have been struggling with the execution ever since the last season. They would need their experienced players to step-up to take on the potent Perth Scorchers and if that happens, the Renegades will certainly be in business.

This is a ground where defending can be very difficult. Also, the fact that the surface is likely to stay pretty much the same over the course of the match makes setting a total even more tougher. Having said that, the score-board pressure could play its part too. Keeping everything into consideration, we expect the captain winning the toss to field first.

The Docklands Stadium at Melbourne is known to be a high-scoring venue and we saw exactly the same in the last match played here. A total of over 350 runs were scored and the surface looked as good as new even at the back-end of the second innings. We expect a fresh wicket deck to be used for this upcoming match and the ball is likely to come onto the bat nicely. With short boundaries and quick outfield, batsmen will get value for their shots. Considering that and the even nature of the surface, a total of about 180 runs batting first will be about par here.

This is an important match for the two sides, primarily because of two reasons. One, both these sides are coming off a short break and getting into the winning ways could prove to be game changing given the role momentum plays. Second, another loss for the Renegades will put them further down the hole they are already in deep. Considering those aspects, we expect both sides to come out hard at each other. With a better-side on paper and having the momentum with them, Perth Scorchers are a better side at the moment and are our pick to bet on as winners for this upcoming fixture.
One of the major reasons for Perth Scorchers to be at the top of the ladder is the consistently spectacular performance by Mitchell Marsh with the bat. He already has a century and fifty to his name and will be looking to make a mark in this edition of the Big Bash League. With the surface likely to be an excellent one to bat on, Marsh will be looking to score another big one here. Bet on Mitchell Marsh to score yet another half century here.
Melbourne Renegades have not done too well in the competition and a lot of that can be attributed to their poor performance with the bat. Aaron Finch finally looked good in the last match and it would be imperative for him to be at his best at the top for the Renegades to succeed. Considering that he is a momentum player and can rack up a string of big scores once settled is certainly a positive for the Renegades. We expect him to provide an excellent start to his side in this upcoming match and score a personal total of at least 22 runs in the process.
