Just as we are nearing the midway mark of the competition in Big Bash League 2021, things are certainly beginning to take shape beautifully. Perth Scorchers and Sydney Sixers are running away at the top of the points table, but the competition is pretty intense in the middle part of the ladder. The next few games are going to be pretty important in the context of the standings.
Up next in the competition, Hobart Hurricanes are set to take on each other in a mid-table battle, which may well-prove to be game changing for the winning side. This match between the Hurricanes and Stars is to be played at the Bellerive Oval, Hobart on 24th December 2021.
Just a couple of seasons ago, Hobart Hurricanes used to be a threatening side that got better of even the best in the business. They have a pretty much the same side now, but lack of proper execution and frequent chops and changes have hurt them. They have been far from their best in the competition thus far and are consequently sitting in the bottom half of the points table.
At the moment, Hobart Hurricanes are placed at the sixth spot on the points table and a win here will take them through into the top half. They have six points to their name coupled with a rather poor net run rate of -0.833, which just shows how poor they have been in the competition thus far.
On paper, Hobart Hurricanes are a little too over-reliant on their opening pair of D'Arcy Short and Matthew Wade. As evidence, the only match that they have won saw both of them score a remarkable fifty each. Other than the pair, they have been dismal in both the departments of the game. It is high time that Hobart Hurricanes get their plans in order with competition moving ahead at a rapid pace. They would need contributions from almost everyone and if that happens, they will certainly be in business big time.

With a record defeat at the hands of Sydney Sixers in the opening match, Melbourne Stars couldn't have gotten off to a worse start than they did. Despite that kind of start, however, Melbourne Stars would be pretty satisfied with the position they are in at the moment. Another win here will take them into the top-four and that is exactly what they will be aiming for.
As it currently stands, Melbourne Stars are placed at the fifth spot on the points table with seven points coupled with a terrible net run rate of -1.643. They have so far won two and lost two. Melbourne Stars bounced back into the tournament with a couple of back to back wins over Sydney Thunder, but a recent loss against the Sixers has certainly set them back again.
It was their versatile bowling that got them wins against the Thunder, but the chinks in their bowling were all exposed against a more potent batting unit. Batting first, Melbourne Renegades managed to scamper through to a total of 177 with Glenn Maxwell scoring a fine century, but the total didn't prove to be enough. Sydney Sixers won the match by 7 wickets with 2 balls to spare.
On paper, Melbourne Stars have a terrific unit and they are just about beginning to get their execution right. With Glenn Maxwell in fine form already, if the other ones are able to step up their game too, the Stars will be one difficult side to deal with.

In both the matches played here in this edition, the team batting first emerged victorious and that too by considerable margins. Even though batting first is generally against the trend in the T20s, it isn't really a surprising decision here. The surface generally slows down considerably and batting gets difficult here as the match progresses. Add to that the pressure of chasing a tall total. We expect things to move in a similar direction in this match as well and, therefore, the captain winning the toss is expected to bat first.

Only two matches have thus far in the tournament been played here and both have been pretty sporting encounters, as far as the battle between the ball and the bat is concerned. In the upcoming match as well, we expect there to be something in the surface for batsmen and bowlers both. With temperatures hovering around 20 degrees and negligible chances of rain, it is expected to be an excellent day for Cricket. This is a day game and the surface might slow down a bit, bringing spinners into play. Considering all that, the par score here is around 165 and the team batting first should be happy with anything over that.

Although the two sides are placed almost neck and neck on the points table, there is a day and night of difference between how these two have played. After a dreadful start, Melbourne Stars have found their feet whereas Hobart Hurricanes still seem to be searching for the answers. With experience available right through, Melbourne Stars are also a better balanced side between the two. Considering that and the recent form of the two sides, betting on a Stars win here should be the way to go.
Glenn Maxwell has been in terrific touch since his stint with RCB earlier this year and he is someone who doesn't really let the opportunity go. He is equally severe on spinners and pacers and will hold the key for the Stars in the upcoming match. Considering the experience he has and the knock he played in the last match, bet on Maxwell to be the best batsman of the day for the Stars.
With the likes of Matthew Wade and D'Arcy Short in fine form, Hobart Hurricanes arguably have a better opening pair in terms of recent form and on paper caliber. Besides, Stars' top-order has not done anything of substance in their last couple of matches. For that reason, we would be betting on Hurricanes to end up as the side with the better first wicket partnership.
