Robert Spiess Memorial Haiku Award Competition 2009
Deadline: In hand no later than March 13, 2009.
Theme: Haiku are to be written in the spirit of the following “Speculation” (Robert Spiess, A Year’s Speculations on Haiku, Modern Haiku Press, 1995): In haiku the juxtaposition or “confrontation” of entities produces a tension charged with energy that generates an insight, intuition or felt-depth of an aspect of reality; it is a movement, a birth, that leads to a new level of awareness [Prompted in part by a passage of C.G. Jung’s].
Entries must be in English. Each entry must be the original, unpublished work of the author, and should not be under consideration in a contest or for publication elsewhere. For purposes of this competition, appearance of a haiku in an Internet journal, a Web site, or a blog is considered publication, but sharing haiku on a private e-mail list is not. Of course, entries should not appear in an Internet journal, Web site, blog, or haiku list during the term of the competition.
Poets may submit a maximum of five haiku. Entries should be typed or printed legibly.
Submit three copies of each haiku on plain white 3´´ x 5´´ cards or paper. The haiku (one haiku per card) should appear on the face of each card. The poet’s name, mailing address, telephone number, and e-mail address (if any) should appear on one of the three cards, in the upper left-hand corner above the haiku; the other two copies should contain only the haiku. Please keep a copy of your submission; entries will not be returned. Please follow the instructions carefully: entries that are incomplete or that do not comply with the instructions will be discarded.

The First Yamadera Basho Memorial Museum English Haiku Contest
Only unpublished three-lined haiku poems written in English and containing a season word are acceptable. Each contestant is allowed to submit up to two poems. Japanese translation is unnecessary.
Judging will be by Takeshi Iijima (President of the International Association of Japanese Studies, Professor Emeritus of Yamagata University), Noboru Oba (Chairperson of the Board of Directors of the Yamagata City Culture Foundation), and an ALT of the Yamagata City Board of Education.

(1) One division for high school students, college students and adults
(2) One division for junior high school students
Application procedure:
On one sheet of A4 size paper or a post card include the name, age, sex, nationality, address, and phone number of the applicant along with the poem. If the applicant is a junior or senior high school student, also include the name of his or her school.

All entries must be original, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere. There is no limit to the number of submissions.
A first prize of $100 will be awarded in each of the four categories. For the Haiku and rengay contests only, second and third prizes of $50 and $25 will be awarded.
Haiku, Senryu, and Tanka Submission Guidelines
Type or print each entry on two 3 x 5 cards. In the upper left corner of each card identify its category as Haiku, Senryu, or Tanka. On the back of one card only, print your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address (optional).

The 2009 James W Hackett/BHS International Haiku Award
Haiku must be original, in English, not previously published nor under consideration for publication or entered in any other competition.
Deadline: in hand by 30 November, 2009.
Award: Two winning haiku will be chosen, each by a separate adjudicator.

and here on the BHS website some time prior to June.
Winning and commended haiku will be published on the BHS website, in Blithe Spirit and in the call for entries for next year’s Award, and may be archived (eg. by British Poetry Library). Otherwise, copyright is retained by the authors.
Each haiku must be printed or typed onto three separate 5 x 3 in (125 x 75 mm) sheets or cards.
Entrant's name and address to be on the back of only one sheet/card in each set of three.
Submissions to be sent by post to Hackett Award, Newton House, Holt Rd, North Elmham, Norfolk NR20 5JQ, UK.
An entry must be accompanied by the flat rate entry fee of £3.00 or US$6.00 for up to three haiku, and £1.00 or US$2.00 per haiku thereafter.
Cheques and Orders should be made payable to 'British Haiku Society'.
Due to high currency and clearance charges, payment can only be accepted in Sterling by cheque drawn on a UK bank branch, by British Postal Order, in Sterling / US cash, or by Sterling International Money Order.
All BHS Committee Members are debarred from entry.
For notification of results, please enclose a self-addressed envelope with appropriate UK stamp, or two IRCs, (which must be stamped by the issuing office) or US$1.00 (so, US$7 in bills covers both entry fee and notification).
Adjudication: A shortlist will be prepared by a BHS sub-Committee from anonymous copies of the submissions.
James W Hackett and Dee Evetts will then each choose a winning poem and up to four commended poems.
The winning manuscript will be announced in February 2010. The author will be awarded 10 free copies, plus a contract for 10% royalties on the sale of other copies of the chapbook. The winner will work with the production team on the chapbook design. Send between 12 and 24 pages with 2 haiku/page. An electronic copy is also required.

The Winter Moon Awards for Haiku 2009

The 2010 Anita Sadler Weiss Memorial Haiku Awards
Deadline: In-hand by January 31, 2010.
Eligibility: Open to the public, aged 14 and up. (Only the contest coordinators are prohibited from entering.)
Awards: Total of $300.00 in prize money: First Place, $175.00; Second Place, $75.00; Third Place, $50.00. Five ranked Honorable Mentions will also be awarded. (Contest coordinators reserve the right to lower the prize money if sufficient entries are not received to cover the stated awards.)
Submissions: All entries must be the original work of the poet, unpublished, and not under consideration elsewhere.
Entry fee: $1.00 per poem. Poets may enter up to 15 haiku. Entry fee must accompany submission.
