Capabilites and Limitations

Since 01/01/98

ARDI's completely clean-room approach to the creation of this Macintosh emulator has two major effects.

First, it allows for lightning quick emulation. In fact, Executor on an entry level Pentium can run many Macintosh applications faster than the machines for which they were written. For more information on this, see the whitepaper on ARDI's homepage.

Second, it unfortunately limits the ease with which functionality can be added to the product. Consequently, while able to fulfill the needs of many people, some may find its current limitations too extreme. Below is a brief outline of what a user can expect to work, and not to work, under Executor 2.

    Capabilities:
  • Runs most software that runs on a Quadra with System 6.0.7
  • Runs many programs which rely on System 7.x functionality
  • Reads from, writes to, and formats Macintosh 1.4 MB (high density) floppies
  • Reads from and writes to Macintosh external hard drives (with external SCSI port) and removable media such as Zip and SyQuest drives
  • Reads Macintosh CD-ROMs
  • Imports Macintosh fonts
  • Supports sound under DOS, Linux, and Win32
  • Supports printing under NEXTSTEP and Postscript printing on all platforms. Also contains a built-in interface with Aladdin GhostScript for use with any printer
  • Supports 256 colors
  • Creates simulated Macintosh volumes on PC hard drives
  • Stores Macintosh files natively on PC volumes

    Limitations:
  • No multitasking (although in most operating systems, multiple instances of Executor can run simultaneously)
  • No non-Postscript printing in DOS, Linux, and Win32 (without use of Aladdin GhostScript)
  • No COM port support
  • No networking support
  • No sound under NEXTSTEP
  • Cannot format hard drives or removable media drives
  • Does not support control panels, INITs, CDEVs, QuickTime, Desk Accessories, or System 7.5 or higher

ARDI is working to implement many of the functions listed above as currently not supported. Also, with the release of "bleeding edge" builds, a user can personally test these new functions as they are written!.
