Executor, a Macintosh emulator for x86 architecture, is produced by Abacus Research and Development, Inc., a small company from Albuquerque, New Mexico. With this program, a PC owner can run many Macintosh applications as well as read and write to Macintosh formatted media. Originally written for the NEXTSTEP platform, Executor has been ported to DOS, Linux, and 32-bit Windows as well.

Executor is designed to emulate the Motorola 68LC040 processor running System 6.0.7, although it is capable of running some System 7.x applications as well. (For detailed information, see the Capabilities and Limitations page.) All of this has been accomplished strictly through clean room techniques. The people at ARDI have not reverse engineered the Apple ROM. Instead, they have re-implemented most of the MacOS system calls individually. The result is a fast, albeit somewhat limited, Macintosh emulator that runs with no Mac ROM images or system software needed.

Although some may find Executor useful (indeed, in college I found it indispensible!) ARDI stresses that the product may not be the ideal solution for everyone. For that reason, they have produced a mostly-functional demo version available for download off the internet. With a 30 day trial period, the demo provides a splendid example of the capabilities and potential of the Executor project. If you are interested, read on! Or, go straight to the source at ARDI's homepage where you can find information about the Executor newsgroup (comp.emulators.mac.executor), the Executor FAQ, and more.
