| As the monsoons continued in India, operations in China were stepped up. Japanese Headquarters at Linchwan was hit on the 4th and 9th and Canton on the 6th and 8th. B-25's from Kweilin and Hengyang staged through Nanning to bomb Haipong in French Indochina (Vietnam) for the first time on the 9th. Hankow was hit on the 10th, as was Sienning. Airfields at Yoyang and Nanching, from which the enemy was attacking Hengyang, were bombed on the 11th; rail and road junctions in Lashio, Burma were hit on the 26th and 29th: Hoang Su Phi and Phu Lo in French Indochina on the 28th; and supply
dumps and airfields at Myitkyina on the 30th and 31st.
Japanese aircraft attempted raids against the US airfield at Kweilin on the 5th, but were met over the target area by P-40's, losing 5 aircraft. During the month the detachment of the 11th Bomb Group (H) based at Kunming began operating from Nanning, then returned to Kunming. The 16th Fighter Squadron moved from Kunming to Chunking, the 75th Fighter Squadron moved from Hengyang to Chanyi, and the 76th Fighter Squadron from Kweilin to Kunming. In India, Major General Clayton L. Bissell relieved Brigadier General Earl L. Naiden as Commanding Officer of the 10th, allowing General Naiden to devote his full time to the command of the India China Ferry Command under the 10th. |
