Mabini College was founded in Iriga, Camarines
Sur,
now Iriga City as Camarines
Sur Institute
with an enrolment of only twelve (12) students.
The founder, the late Miguel R. Ibana and his students were aptly called Mr. Ibana and his twelve disciples.
From this humble beginning, fate had made it, so that it grows to
encounter almost all insurmountable difficulties that only sheer
determination, perseverance and untold sacrifices could overcome.
Its triumph over the test and vicissitudes of time is now a
gain say a monumental contribution to education in Camarines
Norte.
The Monroe Educational Survey
Commission, which appraised the condition of the private schools in 1928, found most private schools over
the island to be hopelessly substandard.
As a consequence, a vigorous purge of undesirable private
schools was instituted and 38% were closed.
Surviving this purge were only two private schools in the
Bicol Region, one of these two was Camarines Sur Institute.
During the ensuing years, this school gained prestige as the
biggest private school in the Bicol Region under a new name, Apolinario
Mabini Institute.
While this school in Iriga was at
its zenith, the World War II broke out and they did not spare the school from destruction.
Its building were ruined, the books burned, school equipment
were looted that at the end of the war, it had to start from scratch.
Capitalizing on its pre war name, the school was preferred and
patronized by students in that area.
The incidental increase in enrolment poised many problems to
the school. But its
founder was equal to the task that in a brief period of two years, he
started to establish a higher standard than many other private
schools in the region that by 1948, it
became the leading private school in Bicol.
The following year, despite its growing enrolment and prestige
in Iriga, the late founder and his inspiring and self sacrificing
wife, Mrs.
Flora Avila-Ibana, decided to
transfer the school to Daet, Camarines Norte
to serve their native province for the remaining
years of their lives.
They took along with them
complete laboratory apparatuses and library facilities, equipment and
other paraphernalia. But
the re-establishment of the school here in Camarines
Norte was met with the vehement
opposition from competitors that the college had to struggle for the
foothold in the province. The
ensuing competition was characterized by struggle for the survival of
the fittest. The college
assuming the new name, Mabini Junior College was blessed to survive and grow.
