Little Darlings

Star Rating: *** (and a half)

Note: It should be remembered that this movie was made before the advent of the PG-13 rating, most likely today it would warrant that rating instead of the harsh R.  The movie does contain some language, sexual talk, and adult themes.

Starring:

Tatum O'Neal...Ferris

Kristy McNichol...Angel

Armand Assante...Gary

Matt Dillion...Randy

Krista Erickson...Cinder

Anyone who's ever been to summer camp will probably find something to relate to in the 1980 film Little Darlings.  Ferris and Angel are two fifteen-year-old summer camp misfits.  One's made fun of because she's rich and the other one because she's from the "wrong side of the tracks".   Although extremely different girls they have one thing in common.  They're both virgins.

Cinder, the most experienced girl in camp who has 'gone all the way' and loves Last Tango In Paris, forces the two girls into a race when she finds out about their sexual status.  No, not a good old camp relay race but a race to see which girl can loose their virginity first!

The girls choose their targets.  Ferris goes for a camp counsdarlings.jpg (12367 bytes)elor played nicely by Armand Assante while Angel goes for the oh-so-young Matt Dillion, the tough guy from the boy's camp across the lake.  Their escapades run wild in their pursuits and include stealing a condom machine, hot wiring a camp bus, and making risky trips across the lake to the boy's camp.

I thought Little Darlings was both an entertaining, comical, and sensitive look at virginity, love, and teenage sexuality.   Since I'm only a year younger than the two main characters the dilemma did seem plausible and it provided an interesting look at what "loosing it" is really (or really not) like for a teenage girl.
