Bauman, J. Nevin, Class of 1920
You are a man who operates best in high gear under the full throttle of responsibility. An advocate of progressive engineering in motor truck design, you have been credited by your professional colleagues with the revitalization through innovation of one of our nation's major firms, the White Motor Company. You joined the sales organization of this company in 1922 after receiving your master's degree in engineering from the University of Michigan. After serving in training jobs in engineering and research, you began work as a retail truck salesman in Baltimore. Your training in sales, added to your engineering background, blended well and your talents won you rapid promotion. You served as Vice President in Charge of Sales from 1935 to 1955, as Executive Vice President of the Truck Division from 1955 to 1956, as President from 1956 to 1960, as Chief Executive Officer from 1960 to 1969, and, finally, as Chairman of the Board and Chief Executive Officer since 1969. Your business and executive talents have been celebrated in major publications, including Life magazine, Forbes, Business Week, and Fortune.
You have served your nation as a consultant and adviser on a wide range of transportation problems, and you have served your alma mater as a member of the Development Council and as a Patron of the University. The scope and level of your endeavors are truly remarkable, and your fellow Alumni are proud to recognize you for these meritorious achievements in your chosen profession by presenting this award to you, Mr. J. Nevin Bauman, distinguished member of the Class of 1920.
