What is Geocities?

Geocities is a free Web Hosting service. Besides allowing users to upload a website for free it has some facilities for building a web site from scratch.
Over the years it has changed and the free service is not as extensive as it once was.
To have the same services as before now requires upgrading to a paid service.
However for the modest needs of QBW it has so far been sufficient.
The Geocities website shows an ad on the side but it can be minimised with a simple click. The ads are not as intrusive as on other free web hosting sites.

Quirks of Geocities

To work efficiently with Geocities you need to understand some of its quirks.

Geocities has its own uploading tool which is used from the website. With the free version you are unable to load via FTP or Front Page.

Files which are uploaded to Geocities must NOT have any blank spaces in the filename otherwise it will not upload.

Geocities is case specific so that Calendar.html is not the same as calendar.html
Also calendar.htm is not the same as calendar.html

Geocities allows only one level of subfolders. Thus a folder cannot contain another folder.
