Iraq:  Still going for the Nukes

"Scott Ritter Testifies in Senate "
(September 4, 1998)

From Iraq Foundation

On September 3, former Iraq weapons inspector Scott Ritter testified before a joint hearing of the Senate Foreign Relations and Armed Services Committees. Ritter, who resigned in late August, told the Committees that

UNSCOM believes that Iraq has components for 3 nuclear devices that lack only fissile material to be operational. The fissile material can either be bought abroad or developed domestically. In the latter case, it could take Iraq several years to develop the material;

UNSCOM believes that Iraq has a "break out" plan to rebuild long-range missile within 6 months once the Iraqi leadership gives the go-ahead;

UNSCOM has evidence that Iraq retains capability in biological, chemical and missile weapons;

Ritter believes that long-term monitoring will be ineffective if it is not backed up by rigorous inspections;

Iraq's concealment program and strategies have been ongoing since 1991, are designed at the top levels of power and involve security and military organs directly connected to the Iraqi leadership.
