Mangroves from Yaringa boat harbour

The issue of nuclear power in Hastings was raised and three ladies came together to discover some large projects lumbering about in government departments both state and local, big business and the Port of Hastings Corporation trying to implement the changes required for it to happen. There was very little public knowledge of the project and it may have gone on un-noticed until it was too late to stop it. A lack of public consultation was to blame and it is hoped that it can be held off in the meantime until it can be understood by all and sorted out.

The Port of Hastings Corporation has a project in plan to expand operations and facilities at the Port of Hastings site on Westernport Bay. It is not just the port expansion that is of concern, but also the required upgrades to road and rail infrastructure, freight management at an inland port at Lyndhurst and whatever else that may be developed.

The impact of the project is far reaching and it is essential that we get more information out into the public arena. Property values are now destabilized and the environmental concerns are significant. Of course there may be some benefits such as employment and economic growth, but it is still a gamble and not guaranteed to work.

The people involved in starting up this group are concerned about the future of this Port of Hastings project and wish to spread the word that something big is about to happen and it may affect many people, not just in Hastings, but in Somerville, Lyndhurst, Pearcedale, Officer, Pakenham as well as those living along the routes that may be used for the infrastructure needed to be upgraded to support such a huge project. The development of road and rail infrastructure from the Westernport region all the way into the city will mean many more trucks and trains on our roads. The required infrastructure also requires land, and Public Acquisition Overlays WILL RESULT in these developments if they go ahead.

We are attending meetings, digging out information and trying to put some sense into a project that looming up like a huge shadow to be cast over all of us. Take time to browse this site and send an email if you wish to know more information. How will the Port of Hastings Corporations plans to expand port activities in Western Port affect you? Is it a good, or a bad idea? How will it affect the wildlife, marine life and just as importantly, human life! Is it a doorway to nuclear power in this country?

Express your concerns and ask questions using the contact link to the left. Get involved, and get informed.
