First Grade – Shooting Practice Score: 5-0 Goal Scorer(s):
Ash Mathieson ’25, Nick Sheather ’55
& ’75, Nick Rainey ’60 & ’70 Match Report:
No one likes one sided games but it was clear with the amount of chances and
room Saints afforded us that they were resigned to the fact that relegation
was inevitable. This reflected in the effort and enthusiasm, or lack of it,
they showed on the pitch. It was a day of missed opportunities even though the
score-line suggested plenty of goals. We missed a mountain of chances in
front of goals with no less than half a dozen missed one on one’s. We
even somehow managed to miss a “one on none” which summed up our
shooting, although you can’t complain with a 5-0 result and take it
anytime. There were too many chances to mention in the first period
with the Saints keeper getting plenty of practice. Ash Mathieson
continued his good form and was the link between the halves and forwards. He
scored the only goal of the half by finishing well with his left with the
keeper to beat. It was a good game for the Sheather brothers return after a
5 week siesta overseas with Tim barely raising a sweat at sweeper and Nick
getting plenty of shooting practice and scoring twice in the process. Nick
Rainey made his return to the top side after impressing last week and after
an uncharacteristic miss in the first half, made up for it by rounding the
keeper for his first goal and followed it up with a terrific long range
strike for his second. The most pleasing aspect of the game was how well we played
through the midfield and the way we controlled general play. O Our defence was rarely troubled with Ben Molyneux, in goals, having one of his quietest games of
the year. It was probably the best opportunity for our backs to get forward
and score a rare goal late in the game. Birdy
pushed forward in the last 10 minutes and almost scored off a header but just
managed to put his shot wide of goals. Some favourable results now see the boys clear second with
two rounds remaining. The Pittwater game at Man of the Match: Adam Townsend Reserve Grade – Reggies Break Clear Score: 5-1 Goal Scorer(s): Guy
Halpin ’35 & ’55, Dwayne Beazley
’40 & ’60, Darren Leach ’75 Match Report: An
early scare was not enough to stop Reggies from comfortably beating Saints
who lay at the bottom of the table. It took a while to get into gear but two
first half goals and a dominating second half performance saw them convincing
5-1 victors in the end. It probably wasn’t much of a surprise that an ex-Wakehurst player, Jamie Malar, scored an early goal
against us, as playing against your old club is always motivational. The goal
was scored with some controversy though, as the Saints player appeared to
clearly handball it, prior to laying on the killer
pass but decisions go against you sometimes and its how you re-act to them
that make the difference. This seemed to unsettle the team and it took a while for
the lads to regain their composure and play smart, patient soccer but once
the first goal was scored it was all the Tigers. Guy Halping
scored our first from close range as he flicked on a ball from close range.
The Saints defender appeared to hand ball it but the linesman correctly
awarded a goal as the ball had passed the line. Not long after we were in
control as Dwayne opened his account to take a 2-1 lead into the break. The second half was a different game when Guy scored his
second with a nice finish to beat the keeper at the near post. Guy and Joe
were then replaced after sustaining slight injuries and rested before next weeks big one. Dwayne managed to score a second as well by chipping the
ball over the keeper from a tight angle. Even Darren “Playmaker”
Leach got in on the action and calmly slotted the ball past the keeper to
round off the scoring and a 5-1 victory. He could have had two but was
fortunate to be adjudged offside after embarrassingly missing his shot wide. All in all a solid performance by the boys after an early
setback and even though Pittwater convincingly defeated Dee Why on Saturday
they were less fortunate on Sunday being held to a draw against Avalon. This
leaves the boys with a four point buffer with 2 games remaining. This weekend
is the big one though and a favourable result against Pitts could see us take
out the comp. Time to step up lads and prove we deserve to win it! Man of the Match: Guy Halpin |
