First Grade – Sutho Strikes Score: 2-2 Goal Scorer(s):
Dave Sutherland ’35 and ’55 Match Report:
Our fourth game in 8 days was the most important game of the season in the
race to the finals. A loss would see With the finals as incentive, it was surprising that the
boys started off slowly, but probably comes down to tired legs from the
rigours of the past three games. It took us a while to get going and it was
apparent that we were going to struggle. Our forwards started off sluggishly
and our marking in defence gave the opposition way too much room. As a result,
we conceded a goal to trail 1-0 for the second time in two days. In almost an
identical position as the Mosman goal just 24 hours earlier, the Dee Why
forward managed to turn and with a yard of space, thumped his long range
effort into the top right hand corner to everyone’s disbelief. We also received an early scare as John O’Leary went
down like a sack of spuds after twisting his ankle but fortunately battled on,
albeit with restricted mobility. We had more injury problems when Joerg came off after a routine knock. After a quick trip
to the sideline for some magic spray, his leg ballooned up and an ambulance
was subsequently called. Luckily Nick Rainey was rested at half time in
reserve grade and was relatively fresh to replace him up front. We created plenty of chances in the first period with Sutho missing an easy header but made up for it shortly
after, when he pounced on a loose ball just outside the box and guided his
shot into the top left corner. Early in the second period Sutho
scored his second after some superb lead up play down the right flank saw
Nick Rainey whip over a pinpoint cross. Sutho made
a well timed run far post and planted his header into the back of the net for
one of our best goals this season. Almost straight after the kick-off Dee Why equalised when
they were once again given too much space outside the box. The ball rolled
into the path of the Dee Why right half who finished with precision and power
by curling the ball with the outside of his right into the opposite corner. Three goals against us from long range in two days
highlights the importance of closing down players outside the box. An area
where we’ve conceded too many goals this season. In the end a deserved result but with a little more luck
could have had all three points. The most pleasing aspect was that we’ve
put the Man of the Match: Dave Sutherland Reserve Grade – Dee Why Defeated Score: 2-1 Goal Scorer(s): Nick
Dillenbeck ’20, Adrian Ogg
(PK) ’55 Match Report: The
reserve grade juggernaut keeps on rolling on as they beat last year’s
bogey team, Dee Why. Amazingly, after playing the tops teams over the last
two weekends, Reggies carry on their winning ways and are still clear first.
This is mainly due to the fact they’ve only conceded a miserly 8 goals
in 19 games!!! After a series of disturbing text messages throughout the
night it was soon discovered Kane was unable to play after twisting his ankle
the previous day. Realising he was out, I’m under the impression he
tried to drown his sorrows with fellow team mates till the wee hours of
Sunday morning. Not the sort of preparation needed for a tough Dee Why
encounter. That being the case there were no major signs of a big night out
and the lads got the job done on the pitch. We were expecting a tougher encounter v Dee Why but by the
looks of their team, they were missing several players from the first leg. We
slowly gained the ascendancy throughout the game but were fortunate not to concede
a goal about 15 minutes in. If it wasn’t for a great reflex save from Andrew
Stahl in goals, matters could have been quite different. Dill scored a neat goal not long after, when he took on the
defence, rounded his opponent and slotted the ball past the keeper. Our midfield played well with Eddy Fong doing plenty of
work down the left and looking dangerous every time he had possession. Dill
made plenty of telling runs into the opposition danger zone and looks like he
is back in top form and combining well with “2 Pot Screamer” Kotevich. The game was wrapped up shortly after, when Dwayne Beazley
was awarded a penalty when brought down after rounding his marker. Oggy once again stepped up for his second penalty in 2
days and calmly placed the ball into the corner. Dee Why scored a late consolation goal after a scramble in
the penalty box and some confusion between the keeper and defence.
A rare defensive lapse allowed Dee Why to tap in from close range but all too
late. In the end a great few weeks for reserve grade and a few
more steps closer to the title. I still haven’t gotten to the bottom of the text
message incident but watch out lads as I’m planning a late one this
Saturday night so don’t be surprised if you get a wakeup call. Revenge
is sweet! Man of the Match: Eddy Fong |
