First Grade – Humiliation on the Hill Score: 7-2 Goal Scorer(s):
Joerg Dierkes ’25,
Tim Smithies ’65 Match Report: I
don’t think much needs to be said about the game against Some people might say that the defence or keeper is to
blame when so many goals are conceded but with the system we play it’s
vital a majority of our defending is done up-field. Granted we made some
mistakes at the back but this was not why we conceded so many goals. Our
shape early on was our biggest problem with our midfield and front three not
working as a unit. This opened up holes that the opposition took advantage of
making it easy to get in behind our defence and score easy goals. It was also evident that several players were underdone and
need to show how committed they are to the cause by making it a priority to
get to training and working hard. As the old adage goes… You play like
you train. In all my 18 years of soccer with Wakehurst
at the top level, I’ve never been so disappointed in the team’s
effort and attitude. I don’t care about final scores but am more
interested the way play and the way we go about it. If we put in the required
effort at training and on the park and play with the right attitude and lose
7-2, so be it. The most embarrassing part of the weekend’s game was
the lack of respect shown to each other and more importantly the lack of
respect shown to supporters who watch our games week in and week out. It’s time to show what spirit, determination, respect
and pride we have in each other and the Orange and Black by putting in a
massive effort against the Manly Vale and Brookvale this weekend. Let’s
show our supporters what we’re really all about! Man of the Match: None Reserve Grade – Bacon and Eggs on Toast Score: 3-0 Goal Scorer(s): Dwayne
Beazley ’15, ’30, Kane Mathews ’70 Match Report: There
were some positives on a dark day at The boys have several early chances with Dwayne’s
pace causing problems with the Hill defence. A few early one on one’s
weren’t converted but it wasn’t long before Dwayne put one away.
An overlapping run by Tim Eaton down the right led to a dangerous cross which
was easily tapped in for a 1-0 lead. We did have some anxious moments with defenders over
committing and losing the ball in dangerous positions but Lenny covered well
to thwart any Dwayne was on the spot again and showed plenty of
commitment to beat his marker to the ball and slot the second for a 2-0 lead.
Unfortunately in the process he had a re-occurrence of a groin injury and was
substituted not long after. Darren “Playmaker” Leach was dominating in the
middle of the park and his talking and communication was vital to controlling
play and organising the midfield. Even though the legs are getting older the
brain’s still working well. Taking the simple options ensured we got of
top of our opponent. Adam Burling played his best game of the season at left
half and linked well with the forwards and fellow midfielders. Showing more
determination to win the ball he pressured the opposition into mistakes and
positional played a smart game. Our defence was strong once again with the experience of
Lenny, Oggy and Charlie making all the difference.
Kane also had an outstanding game and was rewarded in the second period after
making a forward run. I still don’t know if it was a cross or shot but
the result was a goal that sealed the result. Well done lads. Let’s make sure we’re ready for
a big double header this weekend. Man of the Match: Darren Leach |
