SYNOPSIS/PLOT An odd couple of sorts, meditative and stern Alvin and his girlfriend’s brother, Lance, dopey and insecure, leave the city behind to spend the summer in solitude repainting traffic lines down the center of a country highway ravaged by wildfire. As they sink into their job in the remarkable landscape, they learn more than they want to about each other and their own limitations. An unlikely friendship develops through humor and nasty exchanges, leading to surprising affection.
PRO REVIEWS ----------------------------------------
"A warmly enjoyable dual-character study whose mix of comedic and serious elements should get the good reviews needed to bolster middling commercial prospects" (Dennis Harvey: Variety)
----------------------------------------
"Perhaps Green's chief accomplishment in this odd little gem of a movie is that he coaxes that mutual compassion out of the characters without having to put it into words" (David Rooney: The Hollywood Reporter)
----------------------------------------
"The performances disappoint (...) Rating: ** (out of five)" (Sebastian Doggart : The Guardian)
----------------------------------------
"You'll love the film when it's being quiet; alas, it begins a slow slide toward cutesy meeting of the minds, which, even in these capable actors' hands, comes off like an indie cliché (...) Rating: *** (out of five)" (Joshua Rothkopf: Time Out)
----------------------------------------
"Mr. Green is too fond of these guys, and too respectful of the little bit of freedom they possess, to ensnare them in the machinery of a plot" (A. O. Scott: The New York Times)
----------------------------------------
"This sweetly eccentric and low-key buddy picture/bromance bears little resemblance to more well-known examples of the genre, such as 'Lethal Weapon' or 'Pineapple Express' (...) Rating: ** 1/2 (out of four)" (Claudia Puig: USA Today)
