We are heading down the valley to Fort Battleford, a National Historic Site located in the town of Battleford, 153km northwest of Saskatoon. Constructed as a North West Mounted Police post in 1876, it was a very important site in relation to the Northwest Rebellion of 1885.

More about Fort Battleford

More about the North West Mounted Police, later the RCMP.

We were guided around the fort by a very knowledgeable young woman in the dress of a servant during the rebellion. That's her in the pink dress to the right of the photo.

With a group of Gr 4s from Saskatoon, we are watching a cannon demo, much enjoyed by all.

The Fort was very interesting not only for the buildings and its history but for the collection of Police memorabilia and household equipment displayed. To my surprise I recognised a couple of things from my English great grandmother's kitchen.

We finished off the day, rather prosaically, at a laundromat. The water is so soft here that laundry comes up much better than at home. Next time I am going to bring ALL my clothes.
