A private collection of Work Boxes, Writing Slopes and other antiques
carefully restored to original condition by a skilled & experienced craftsman.
The Writing Slope
Dating from C1870, the close grained mahogany case of this Writing Slope is in fine condition with oval brass inlay, (unmarked) brass lock & hinges. Originally made during the reign of Queen Victoria, the Velvet lining and the Red Leather writing plate, which have been recently restored, are in near perfect condition.
The case features the usual Concealed Compartment(restored), and is in exceptional condition for its age.
The closed case measures 30cm wide x 22cm deep x 11cm high.
The Watch Maker's Case
The Watch Maker's Case was used as a tool & components box on the Watch Maker's Bench. Typically containing watch components in the 12 drawers with tools and cloths in the top compartment, the Case would be on the bench with the watchmaker whilst he worked.
This example, made in Pine, stained by age and frequent polishing shows extensive wear and recent restoration. Original wire hinges & hook lock, with Velvet lining to both drawers and top compartment.
This closed box measures 26cm x11cm x9cm, with each drawer measuring approx 6cm x 10cm.
The Inlaid Victorian Workbox
A rare example of a Victorian Workbox in fine condition which has had the benefit of recent sensitive restoration.
Made in close grained mahogany with decorative mother of pearl, ebony and silver inlay. The brass corners and stopped brass hinges are typical of this style of travelling box.
There are multiple velvet lined hidden compartments to enable the concealement of documents or jewellery.
The closed box measures 30.5cm x22.5cm x18cm.
Oak Deed Box
Commonly used on the desks of professionals in the 19th Century to ensure documents were safe and not 'overlooked', and seals & chains were kept secure.
This example is probably 18th Century in origin. Restoration in the 19th or early 20th Century has removed the original lock and relined the case. The case has been rewaxed.
The closed case measures 36cm wide x 23cm deep x 14cm high
