  When selecting courses in high school, it is very easy to just choose the same classes as your friends. Surely that would be a great idea if the courses you took had no effect on your admittance to university, but they do. 

  Therefore it is very important to select the courses that will provide you with the required knowledge to enter the university program of your choice. Depending on your future career goals, you will have to take different courses. 

Try to plan out your high school courses as early as Grade 9. After all, the decisions you make early might have a direct effect on the ability of taking courses later on in your high school career. If you're not 100% sure of your future goals, keep all your options open for as long as you can.

It is best to set up a personal student record to plan out your high school career, and to keep track of courses taken and extra-curricular accitivities you participated in. 

TIMETABLE CONFLICTS: If your Guidance Counselor tells you that your course selection combination can't fit into the school's master schedule, explain to them that you need these courses for your chosen career objectives. If they refuse to work it out to your satisfaction, bring in your parents. Counselors and principals are very intimidated by parents and in most cases, will be able to fix everything when they come in. What a surprise!

Whatever you do, don't let a negotiable schedule get in the way of your aspirations.
