LIFE @ MNIT

This page of my site tells you about how we live in  MNIT or what we do on different days. Life at MNIT is quite different from that in other hostels. We have 8 boys' hostels each with a  capacity of around 150-170 each. So it to sum up atleast 1200 boys are staying in the hostels. Each hostel represent a wonderful world inside the campus. We have four eating outlets inside the campus apart from the hostel mess (where the food is generally not edible). Our college is in the heart of Jaipur, so we go the city whenever we feel like. There are restaurants, multiplexes, malls, resorts etc nearby to enjoy.

An ordinary Day:

We observe 5 days a week policy. That is , since our college is  a central government college, so we have 5 weekdays and Saturdays and Sundays are holidays. The college time is 8 am to 6 pm, not necessarily everyday. We have gaps in between or different timings. In this semester of Computer Engineering we have classes at 8 am everyday. Since we sleep only after 2 am , so we some how mange to wake up by 7.30 and hurry off to class, though there are many instances of missing classes. We don't even get either time or water (which is scarce here) to have bath everyday in the morning.

Exam Time:

We have two midterm examinations (carry 25 % marks) and an End term examination (carries 50 % of marks). So have each of these examination at a distance of 40 days from each other. Most of us in the hostel, believe in one night stand policy i.e., study on the night before the exam. Night outs are the only weapon we have. Just have a brief introduction with the subject till the night arrives. Go to the "thaadi" for a tea to re-energize. One shortcut technique is to study in a group. Study one topic and leave the other for your fellow mates. And teach each other when done. If the subject is a hard nut to crack, then prepare chits or go early to the exam hall to write it down on the table or establish a good network. Ultimately, it is the marks that count, no matter how you got them.

After the Examination (Aftermath):

We have a series of hectic days during exams because generally we dont get any gap between the exams. They are held for 3 days for midterm and 6 days at a stretch for endterm. On most occasions, the students of MNIT go for movies on the days exam gets over. The two multiplexes near the institute, are filled with MNITians mostly. Some prefer to go home. Some like to remove the trauma by drinks party.

Holidays:

Holidays are the most longed and awaited days in here. This is the day we generally get to sleep as much time as we want. Moreover we get enough time to bathe. Movies, drinks, outings, ( studying for some) are added to the schedules.

Birthdays, placements and other celebrations:

Birthdays and placements are often very painful even though these are the days of celebration. In MNIT, we give GPLs (G**** pe laat) i.e., kicks on the a$$ in the name of bumps to mark the celebration. For celebrating other occasions like getting a new bike, winning a contest/ tournament etc., same procedure is followed. The GPL ceremony is followed by a small treat in "thaadi" or the hostel canteen which is popularly known as the GMP (general meeting place).

Unity in diversity in the Deemed University:

There are many occasions when we get to see unity in diversity esp. when comes a reason for "mass bunk". During mass bunk whole of the class decides to bunk the class so that no one gets an absent (or present) mark in the attendance register. Unity is also seen during ragging period, communal fights, other colleges' students attacking MNIT, speak against teachers, cricket match involving India being telecasted etc.
