Open Letters From …A Psychic VampireA Queer Man A Satanist FAQ’s Sources Cited |
A work in Progress: Magus Thomas Potter, First Church of Satan, DarkSide Coven; ShadowLore
It always bothers me, the notion of someone asking for tolerance, someone who cannot see past their own intolerance to cleanse it from their filtering systems. At least once a month I get some post decrying the psychic vampire as a denizen of the underworld who is worth only the space they are taking up on Earth, and should be eliminated so someone else can have it.
Labels, language, are dangerous things in the wrong hands. As an Existential philosopher, I’ve come to distrust dictionaries. Narrow-minded academics who rarely get their hands dirty with the world at large have often written them. So, I will ask my reader to shelve their dictionaries, and their Theosophical literature for a few moments, while I plea a case for something more than tolerance.
I wish to present certain truths, fundamental to the theory of Vampirism. Before I go too far, I am not just the lore keeper on this subject, I am the lore that I am keeping. I am not exactly a Psychic Vampire. In many animal families we find omnivores, herbivores, and carnivores. In that continuum, let me label the carnivore “Vampire,” the herbivore let me call an “Elf,” and for myself, the omnivore, let me call a “Dragon.” No, once this essay is finished, you may revert to whatever names suit you, and likely you will call me a nut. Yet, could you call yourself an expert? Can a male know what it is really like to be a woman without menstruations? Can a human know what it is really like to be a fish? The advantage you have with me is that I am human, and while some things are too daimonic, too irrational to render into thousands of Julian categories, we can reason together.
The universe is energy. Modern science has discovered this, and even more modern science suspects that energy of being intelligent. We human-animals contain the same substances as the rest of the world. Let me get this clear; nothing is outside nature, nothing outside the universe. There are likely many frequencies, amplitudes, interferences and phases of energy, of reality, but they are phases of a single universe. Again, walk away from this essay with your old theories intact, but one must understand the theories of this author to understand what he is sharing with you.
Energy responds to our wishes. It is an oddity of quantum physics that scientists get their questions answered by the particles they are interviewing. The electron knows to act like a particle or a wave when the scientist initiates the experiment. Oh, I don’t think the electron asks the scientist anything, but seems to respond to the question at hand. Maybe one day, when a scientist comes along and can wrap her mind around the idea that the electron is both wave and particle, and can set up the experiment to prove that, the electron will respond to that with delight.
Humans are energetic systems. We are made and use energy on several phases, from our construction to the more ethereal natures of our souls. Just as we take in energy through food, water, and air, we take in soul-energy. Trouble is, many of us have shut ourselves off from the main source of that energy, and need to seek it from other people. Parents take it from their children, children from their parents, bosses from their employees, politicians from their body-politic. Because we are energetically shut off from the Universe, there is a limited supply of this human energy. Those who ‘have’ are taking it from those who ‘have not,’ draining them, sucking them dry. In response to our survival instinct, those at the low end must trick those at the high end into giving it back. Sometimes those at the low end become clingy, desperate, drama queens and kings. Sometimes we become aloof, waiting for you to cultivate what you want from us, or leave us alone. Sometimes we bully or criticize others to get what we want. Still, this economic system is limited and small, limited pool will soon stagnate and become poisoned.
We each have a general anxiety of dying. Yes, to live is to die. Yet many of us struggle against that truth, often at other people’s expenses. Think about it, why do some people gather too much money to themselves? They can only enjoy so much of it, will he spend the rest on his funeral? At the other end are so many in poverty, worried about having enough to eat, for themselves or their children.
Generally, this is what most will call a Psychic Vampire. Conditions have so deprived some folk of energy, or they have become so depleted and fearful, that they seek to leach it off others. These are normal humans, with a desperate need to survive. In response, the intolerant will greedily hold onto their own energy, in similar fear of being deprived and desolate. This is what I read from Anton LaVey’s and Dion Fortune’s essays on Psychic Vampires. Each is afraid that they will not have enough for themselves, and so tell the poor leach, “Get away or I will kill you!”
Now for the good news. Ending this stagnant mire of rotting energy is quite possible. One need only get a larger perspective on the Universe, and see all that energy out there, just waiting for us to enjoy. Just as no one is alone, no, let us think of that energy like the water on the ocean. Each of us are ripples, creases on the water, each made of water and energy. A crease with enough energy can become a wave. That wave might even be an accumulation of many creases working together. Yet, the crease is a manifestation of the water in the ocean. If we look at each crease as an individual, then we can see that there is a point where the individual ends and the group begins, and then there is the whole of humanity, all life on Earth, all things living and intelligent in the Universe. There is a point of relative isolation, and a point where we connect with everything around us and beyond.
Just as any condensed system has a pattern, a field that organizes events within it, the energy of humanity has a similar pattern. Some of us are positive poles, gathering energy from the Universe, and passing it onto others in our environment. Then, there is the negative pole, where the energy is destroyed, rendered for recycling. Like the Dance between Siva and Kali, this dance keeps the world fresh, alive, healthy.
Nature has equipped some people to be warriors, others farmers, some financiers, and some counselors. Some people are gods, raising and building far more energy than they can possibly use. If they are careful, they can shape that energy to help and heal. Otherwise, they can become rather unstable, flying off the handle, looking for things to do all the time, getting all worked up, and raging out of control. Not healthy in any body. Some of us are Vampires, needing more energy than we can make or generate. If we are careless, we become sick, depressed, lethargic. If we are careful, we can draw off the excess energies some people develop, and even cleanse it of the odd and unusual qualities they don’t want.
Together, these two poles work together to keep the currents of energy within the world fresh and vital. One can do just as much help or harm with a closed fist as we can with an open palm. So, let us get out of our heads that one is good and the other is evil. Both are just as capable of doing harm as the other. Just think of all the wars started over religions and who had the right one. No, I don’t mean a war where the gods where invited to watch or participate, I mean a war where my priest determined that your priest is working for the devil and ought to be exterminated with the lot of you as fuel for the fire! There is no Universal war of good verses evil. Only a struggle between people to keep what little energy they hoard to themselves.
