GOD'S SMUGGLER
Brother Andrew
Reviewed by: Leonard Voo
While waiting for the train, I was glancing at the books on the book
exchange rack at Convent Station when the title of this book jumped out
at me. ( I wonder if some Nun planted it there with a quick prayer.) I
picked it up and quickly became captivated by Brother Andrew's story.
Published in 1967, it is the story of a man of faith reaching out to
persecuted believers behind the Iron Curtain.
The book starts off simply enough - a rambunctious and mischievous
childhood leading up to an aimless adolescence resulting in a young man
joining the army. But then God starts doing obvious miracles in and
around him. As his faith grew, so did the miracles, though everything
didn't always go as planned. The miracles were simple ones, but given
the circumstances, they were incredible. In one example he approached
the border of Yugoslavia and prayed "Lord...When You were on earth you
made blind eyes see. Now, I pray, make seeing eyes blind. Do not let
the guards see those things You do not want them to see." Even with
that prayer he was stopped, the guards looked in his car and even opened
up one of the suitcases, and yet the guards didn't catch anything. And
so he crossed the border with car and luggage stuffed full of bibles and
other illegal materials.
As a suspense novel, this book is a pretty good read. But unlike books
by Le Carre or Ludlum, this one will also challenge your faith and
inspire you to take greater risks for God. To find out more about
