9 inch Muzzle Loading Gun (MKIII)

9 inch RML gun Introduced 1868 

An Armstrong Fraser gun using the then new construction of wrought iron sections. Invented by Sir W Armstrong and adapted by Mr Fraser of the Royal Gun Factory 
This type of gun became the main heavy armament of the Palmerston Forts. 
The gun is now on display at the Castle entrance but it originally was mounted at the Needles battery. 
It was rolled over the cliff when replaced by the guns at Needles new battery, but salvaged by the Royal Navy in the 1960s
