A Quick History

A view of Portsmouth Cathedral
The Cupola shown on the Admiltary charts is the distinctive tower of Portsmouth Cathedral. It forms a well known landmark on the approaches to  the Portsmouth harbour.

The cupola is part of The Cathedral Church of St Thomas of Canterbury. A church dedicated to Thomas Becket who was murdered in 1170.
A prophetic dedication considering later events in 1449.

Its distinctive style results of its unusual origins. The building started life as a church which was  enlarged after becoming  a Cathedral in 1927.
