The Railway 


The best part of this Victorian pier must be the little railway that trundles back and forth along its 700 yd Length. A  free ride for ferry passengers along one of the shortest rail trips in the country.

A W.W.I relic in use 
 
The current train service was started in 1922 using a first world war mustard gas factory engine from Avonmouth. It was a battery locomotive converted to a third rail  electric locomotive .
A Railway with only two Stations 
And this is the one at the pier head.  
The short train is seen leaving on a summers evening 2000.

Power to the village 
 
When the electric rail service started the company generated its own DC power supply. Surplus power was sold by the Hythe Electricity company to the village for lighting.
