WHO does it affect?


Hand-foot-mouth disease usually affects children under the age of 10 and most commonly, children younger than age 5. Hitting babies and toddlers with symptoms that are much worse. However, it is also seen with some frequency that for some, it can occur up until puberty. Children are typically more vulnerable to infections and illnesses from these viruses, such as the coxsackievirus A16, as compared to adults, they are less likely to have antibodies and be immune from previous exposures to them. When it comes to such viruses, adults are mostly immune but cases in adolescents and adults are not uncommon. It occurs at any time of the year but most common in summer and fall in the case of a country with four seasons.

It is not however, the same as other diseases that have similar names: foot-and-mouth disease or the hoof-and-mouth disease or the mad cow disease. Such diseases almost always occur in animals.
