2005 -The  'space' of Made in Hong Kong
¡@ In this paper, marginalized community struggling against dominant disciplines, principles, norms, conventions, or a set of ruling ideological concepts in Hong Kong are discussed through Fruit Chan movie. Fruit Chan is an independent director in Hong Kong. In 1997, the grand narrative of the handover of Hong Kong sovereignty inspired him to produce his first significant series, what so called 'The trilogy of 1997'. Rather than concentration on political issues in 1997, Fruit Chan concerns about the living situation of marginalized or subordinate group of people who are always ignored in our society. This series includes three films, Made in Hong Kong, The Longest Summer and Little Cheung. The main themes of these three films are diverse but similar. The story of Made in Hong Kong is talking about three 'problematic' juveniles. These three juveniles are discontented with manipulation and irresponsibility of adult world. The story of The Longest Summer is describing five retired soldiers who are trying very hard to survive. These five retired soldiers ascribe their unstable conditions to the leave of British government. Finally, the story of Little Cheung is narrating the experience of a pair of little boy and girl who both live in Tsim Sha Tsui ¡V Mongkok district. Living in the masses, these two children are striving to live in their own way in facing the influence of the political changes of Hong Kong. 'The trilogy of 1997' presents us a comprehensive description of the anxieties and concerns of ordinary Hong Kong people in the angle of three different age groups, juvenile, adult, child.

'The trilogy of 1997' is Fruit Chan's representative films. In his film, he puts emphasis on the voices of subordinate and marginalized groups. 1997 is a critical year in Hong Kong history. This year seems everything is undergoing a change, particularly the change of Hong Kong people. Rather than analysis of the political issues in 1997, I am interested in discussion on the 'space' in which subordinate groups are struggling with the governed dominant power. In the following, the conceptualization of 'space' theories will be introduced and then followed by the analysis of 'The trilogy of 1997' ------ Made in Hong Kong.

2005 -The 'space' of The Longest Summer
¡@ Fruit Chan puts a great effort on representation of the marginalized and subordinate group of people. 1997 is a critical year which labels not only the end of colonial period, but also the returns of Hong Kong region to its hometown. In this paper, instead of analyzing the political issues, I am interested in the topic, 'space', in which subordinate groups are struggling with the governed dominant power. In the following, a literature review of Fruit Chan studies and theoretical framework will be introduced and then followed by methodology and analysis of 'the trilogy of 1997' ------ The Longest Summer.

2005 - Postmodern version of a classical literature: Romeo and Juliet
¡@ In this paper, a classical Shakespeare's literature, Romeo and Juliet, is going to be analyzed in a postmodern angle through a movie. Baz Luhrmann produced a movie, Romeo + Juliet, in 1996. In his film, Baz Luhrmann tries to adapt a classical literature into a postmodern film through a great dual of transformation in term of mise-on-scene, plot and narrative, characters and theme and motifs. The story of Romeo and Juliet is repackaged in a postmodern city. It provides audience with a postmodern possible way to understand a classical and traditional story.

2005 - Postmodern style: Wong Kar Wai's Movies (wrote with teammates)
¡@ Wong Kar Wai is well known for his postmodern style among different local film directors. In this paper, discussion of postmodernism style with the example of Wong Kar Wai's movies is presented through asking a question, how postmodernism is shown in Wong Kar Wei's movies? The inclusion of Wong's movies is As Tears Go By, Days of Being Wild, ChingKing Express, Ashes of Time, Fallen Angels, Happy Together, In the Mood for Love and 2046. Apart from As Tears Go By, almost all his movies are arguable to be 'postmodern'. In the following, there are two sections, theorizing postmodernism, and the analysis of movies. In the section of theorizing postmodernism, a postmodernist, Fredric Jameson, claims that postmodern text should more or less contain a certain kind of styles. In the section of the analysis of movies, Wong's movies is going to be systematically studied in terms of Jameson's postmodernism styles, time and space, intertextuality, pastiche, decentralization, hybridity/fragmentation, schizophrenia and nostalgia. Finally, instead of conclusion a critique will be drawn onwards.

2005 - The 'space' of Little Cheung
¡@ A pair of marginalized boy and girl is focused through their different ways of resistances against the system of dominant adult society in Hong Kong. An independent director Fruit Chan produces a series of films which are talking about the social impacts of handover of Hong Kong sovereignty, namely 'the trilogy of 1997'. Rather than posing the angle of political issues, his 'the trilogy of 1997' discusses more on the living situation of various peripheral groups of people who are labeled as 'the outsider' in our society. 'The trilogy of 1997' consists of three films, Made in Hong Kong (1997), The Longest Summer (1998) and Little Cheung (2000). The story of Made in Hong Kong is describing the experiences of three 'problematic' juveniles who are discontented with manipulation of adult world. The story of The Longest Summer is narrating five retired soldiers who ascribe their unstable living conditions to the irresponsible British colonial government. Finally, the story of Little Cheung is talking about the experience of a pair of little boy and girl in Tsim Sha Tsui ¡V Mongkok district. Living in the masses, these two children are striving in their own way as a rebellion to the political changes of Hong Kong in 1997. 'The trilogy of 1997' presents a rather comprehensive description of the anxieties and concerns of ordinary people in the angle of three different age groups, juvenile, adult, child. 1997 is a critical year which labels not only the end of colonial period, but also the returns of Hong Kong region to its hometown.

 2005 - Cyberlove
¡@ Internet love story seems quite bizarre in the early days, but the development of technologies is really amazing. Technologies which define as the science of industry and the mechanical or practical arts are gradually developing with an unpredictable speed. Technologies today probably no longer just understand in an explanation of science, the amazing development even enlarges its definition to the formation of human beings. Not only human network society already heavily depends on technologies, but also sense perception is also being re-constructed through a network of messages, emotional icons, etc. Due to the transformation of technologies, the dominance of traditional face-to-face interaction in social community is subject to great challenges and changes. Without facial communication, the importance of mouth and ear becomes lesser which is similar to the results of, the theorist McLuhan named, the extension of eye, in other words, verbal communication is more or less replaced with written communication. The formation of traditional social community is also questioned or even threatened while a new community which is based on written communication emerges as virtual community. Living in this virtual community, human beings seem to achieve some breakthroughs on the topic of democracy, equity, fairness and openness. Similar to 'space' in social community, 'cyberspace' could be regarded as a locus to develop virtual community. While tons of people celebrate the nature of cyberspace, find their lovers on Internet, and argue its flexibilities could provide them with a brand new idealistic, prefect and romantic society, I discover cyberspace is not really a dreamland for lovers to live on. There are two statements I am going to discuss. First, Internet loves as kind of human relations always incorporate in the system of capitalistic economy. Second, Internet love relationships are very unstable and problematic. Before the analysis of these two statements, literature review and a significant section the formation of Internet love culture which also names cyberlove are going to be addressed.

2005 - Analysis of Gender concept of Primary 2 to 4 pupils in HK
¡@ Gender concept of primary 2 to 4 pupils (age from 8 to 10) in Hong Kong is going to be studied through quantitative analysis of Chinese and English textbooks. The importance of gender concept not only constructs our value judgment in perception of different social and individual issues, but also influences our mental and psychological development. In gender studies, people argue social construction plays a critical role to draw a set of binary opposition between boys and girls, i.e., boy should do, girls shouldn't do. In this paper, I am not going to challenge the existence of gender concept, but I am interested in examining the correctness and accuracy of the existent gender concepts of primary pupils. In other words, gender education in primary school is my focus.
