Background:
Bhuvaneshwari Slum Community consisting of around 500 households exists in the midst of a rich neighborhood. Most of the women work as domestic workers and men are either construction workers or helpers with no regular income. Their working hours range from 8 to 12 hours or more and they are exhausted by the time they reach home and cannot afford to spend any time with children nor check on their education as they are not educated. Above all almost all the men are alcoholics and so are some women.

Children do not attend schools regularly though there are government schools around and due to lack of time parents cannot monitor their children. They are not aware of banking. Their way of borrowing money adds up to their misery as the rate of interest could be as high as 40%. Most of them are caught up in never ending debts.

As a result children look for small chores like loading trucks. Once they start to earn a little money they lose interest in studies and look for more work. Also the parents want their children to work as that would be an additional income for the family. Education becomes meaningless to them. Most of the girls are married by the age of 15 or 16. Cases of domestic violence and alcoholism are higher than the city average. Necessary amenities like regular water and electricity supplies and sewage are basic. This has been the case for over 30 years.
