General Information

Component choices

Sabots
The sabot is a critical component. It must be tough enough to handle magnum loads, and combine with bullet result for a tight fit to ensure reliable ignition. If the sabot/bullet load easily, misfires result. Expect to exert about 40 pounds of force or more to seat a good bullet/sabot combination. Manufacturars: MMP seems to work the best for most people in most situations; Hornady sabots seem to work for some and not others, Harvestor sabots may work for you, but no one has yet reported any luck with Knight sabots. Bullets
Bullet selection depends on intended use. At present, 0.452 (45 caliber) have generally shown superior accuracy for target shooting, plinking, and hunting. 44 caliber (429-.430) bullet/sabot combinations are very inaccurate- probably due to the sabots available today. More About Bullets...
Primer
Testing so far does not seem to favor any particular primer. Winchester 209 is a popular choice. More about Primers...
Powder
Use factory loads only unless you are an experienced shooter with knowege of how to work a load up safely. More About Powders..

Loads presented by bullet type

Hornady 300 grain XTP MAG #45235.
Hornady 300 grain XTP #45230.

Ignition seems to be extra reliable with these larger bullets, and they pack a real wallop. More information is available on the Bullets Page.

Hornady 250 grain XTP #45200
The 250 XTP is reputed to have marginally better accuracy than the XTP Mag, but the XTP MAG is rated for higher velocity hunting loads. More information is available on the Bullets Page.

Hornady 240 grain XTP MAG #45220
Use load data for the 250 XTP. This is a very good hunting bullet with plenty of power for whitetails. More information is available on the Bullets Page.

175 grain 0.252" DEVEL
The Devel is not made of lead, and it does not expand. It applicable to hunting where deep penetration is required. It's use on deer is debatable. There is no question that it is very accurate. More information is available on the Bullets Page.
