About the Club...

  • HISTORY:
The Secondary Education Club at Slippery Rock University was founded by Dr. Mark Mraz (History Chairman) in the spring of 2004. The main purpose back then was to help students who were not yet in the College of Education participate in group trips to schools in the area to help fulfill their 40-hour early field experience. This is no longer the primary focus of the SEC, however, we do still try to arrange trips that count towards the 40-hours. Since the founding purpose was geared more towards underclassmen, we also thought that it would be nice to do community service projects and field trips to schools to help build resumes for upperclassmen whod like to be involved.

  • THINGS WE'VE DONE:
In the fall of 2004, the SEC chaperoned a fall dance at Slippery Rock High School. That was a lot of fun and were considering doing this again soon. It gave us the opportunity to interact with students as well as talk with the faculty of the school. We also help a school supplies drive near Thanksgiving. In the spring of 2005, after having terrible leadership from the officers, the club almost fell to pieces. Considering were limited on funds and any we do have, we have to raise ourselves was too much to bear for our poor president at that time and the club virtually did nothing that entire semester. One exception: we went to Slippery Rock High School and talked with the Seniors about their college transition and answered their questions. We had a short presentation for them covering all the aspects of how college and high school differ. It was a great event and the school has asked us back again this year. That was the only true success of the spring of 2005. Before the SEC adjourned for the summer, a new president (Ryan Cunningham) and vice-president (myself, Greg Peitz) were elected and since then, weve made progress.

  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS of 2005-2006
-Held a bowling night -A small group went the Slippery Rock Area High School and tutored from 2:30-4 -Successfully completed our first two fundraisers, raising a total of about $200 and since they were 50/50s, we allotted the money to the winner each time. -Became associated with the Lutheran Personal Care Home in Zelienople and partook in 2 service projects--one to show seniors how to set-up and access email, and the other a spelling bee. -Until they were cancelled beyond our control, we were scheduled to visit George Junior in Grove City to observe in a diverse setting, and hold a discussion at Slippey Rock Area High School about the college transition process. -Certificates verifying participation were signed and issued. -Our photo appears in the yearbook, Saxigena.

  • ACCOMPLISHMENTS of 2006-2007
To sum up the year, here is a brief list of events:
-Adopt-A-Highway program, we adopted a 2.2 mile stretch of Route 8 as part of a community service project. We will ave this section in our club's name for a minimum of a 2-year period. -Held a scheduling clinic for underclassmen who were not sure of the process. -Went on a trip to George Junior. -The Spring was a clerical semester for the most part... we got the club organized so that it could function better for 2007-08. -More events will be added as soon as time allows.
