What is
Upanayanam?
Upanayanam is a religious function performed only by a father to a brahmin
boy usually at the age of 11 to convert him to a brahmin, 'brahmachari'
means bachelor. In the function, the boy is given a three threaded sacred
belt ('punool') to cross wear and also he is taught the 'Gayatri
mantra' only in the function, which is called 'brahmopadesam'.
To some boys it might have performed in elder ages too. It is only performed
in ages of odd number (Eg:13,15, etc.) In my case it is performed in the age
of 19 by my uncle (mother's younger brother) as my father is no more at that
time. After upanayanam this the boy is to perform 'Sadhyavandanam'
in three times a day (Dawn, Afternoon, Dusk).
