Yule is the winter solistic. To most, it is celebrated on December 25, while the Pagans and those of like mind, celebrate it on December 21. This day is considered to be the shortest day of the year, although, i believe it could change, due to the fact that it falls upon the day when the sun enters into Capricorn. The celebrations of this day, are in honor of the birth of our Lord and the rebirth of the sun. This is a joyous time for many traditions, with the lighting of the yule log as a symbol of the suns' rebirth. The yule log is normally made of Oak or Ash and is decorated with pine cones and evergreen sprigs and burned in the hearth (fire place) a piece of this log would be saved to light the new log next year. It is believed that by doing this, we allow the warmth of the sun god to stay within our homes for the rest of the year. Other traditions are that of the hanging of the wreaths upon the doors as a symbol of the wheel of the year, and of the years to come. One of my favorite activities is the putting up and decorating of the christmas tree and topping it with the pentagram to sybolize the four elements and the spirit. While this was taking place the elders would tell the children to hang tiny bells at the base of the tree, and when they heard them ring in the middle of the night that it ment the little wood spirits were coming in from the cold to keep warm and eat whatever little treats the children left behind. And let us not forget the exchanging of gifts; (yes, although i have my own spiritual beliefs and my way of living, i to, still love to give and receive gifts just as much as the next person.(it's fun) There are some things a person just can not give up, getting a present is one of them; Ha!! Ha!! Ha!! Ha!! |
