Spring Grove Morris:
Description Of The Side

Table Of Contents

Traditions

The Spring Grove Morris Men perform dances from the Cotswold Morris tradition. These usually require six dancers and at least one musician, though we perform eight man dances occasionally.

Over the years dances have been performed from several English villages, including Adderbury, Bampton, Bidford, Bucknell, Ducklington, Fieldtown, Headington, Lichfield and Upton-upon-Severn.

For the 2009 season have been fortunate to gain eleven new dancers, we have revived Lichfield Ring O' Bells and are focussing teaching Bidford dances to our newest members. Seasoned members will also perform dances from other traditions when dancing out.

Kit

White shirt, white trousers, and coloured neckerchief.
Crossed baldricks of 2 inch green with a central 1 inch yellow stripe. Rosettes on front and back showing a small grove of trees with a spring flowing from them (see the top of the page). Black belt, shoes & socks, bell pads with green and yellow ribbons and a straw hat decorated with badges, flowers and yellow and green ribbons.

The side's name, Spring Grove Morris is taken from the small Victorian backwater between Kingston and Surbiton where the side was formed and centred on the local Young's Public House of the same name.

The Pig

Occasionally the Pig appears and dances with the side. He is a great crowd pleaser but generally causes consternation amongst the younger members of the audience.
