Prior to the 1996 Major League Baseball season, another great organization was formed: the RRBL (Russ’s Rotisserie Baseball League). Named after both its founder (Russ Koeneman) and the sports bar he used to own, the league was an immediate success. The first two seasons saw Steve Durham and his Durham Bulls take home consecutive titles, establishing Steve as the league’s premier owner. It wasn’t until the RRBL’s third year of existence (1998) that I, Brian Vaughan, entered the league. I was 13 years old at the time of my instatement, and I made a bold entrance, finishing one number better than my age (12th). My father (co-owner of our team, the Roundballs) and I fared better in coming seasons, and we’ve managed to finish in the top six (money positions) in four of our seven seasons. In 2005 we’re poised to make a run at our first championship. While Steve Durham (Durham Bulls), Bill Brashears (Bolivar White Rats), and Jay Colson (Monroe St. Massacre) may all have multiple titles, I’m still the youngest owner in the league, and therefore have the most potential for growth. The following is an ongoing account of my 2005 RRBL season, complete with all of my thoughts, opinions, and most importantly, constant whining.
