- Overview for all the Search Engines -

Search Engine Ranking Tips: Dont's

  • DON'T ever include a keyword or key phrase in your meta tags that is not present on that page. Keywords should
reinforcew what is on the page, not define it. This is still going on all over the world. And with Search engines
getting more wise to spam everyday, its time to make sure you haven't got any of those 'loose' keywords on your
    site.
  • DON'T use a general (free) banner exchange service. You will see at most, a 1/50th increase in your site traffic from
the banner exchange and at worst you will lose 1/10th of your traffic because they look cheap. Some people claim
that a few search engines now decrease rankings if the standard banner programs are present
(ie:link exchange/click trade, etc). However, there are some good banner exchanges out there for just certain topics
(kinda like Webrings) that can work good to target a particular demographic audience.

Search Engine Ranking Tips: Do's

  • Do use high value keyword "phrases" in addition to keywords. Look for something unusual, don't just copy the
competition, but do target the competition. Look at your referrals and see what combinations of words are being
used together and work them into a phrase near the beginning of your keywords.
  • Do use descriptive short alt tags for your images - many search engines will use them (which adds to your
keywords). Each search engine has different criteria for indexing your site (as detailed elsewhere; but, all don't
mind the alt tags and some use them - go for it, its a free bonus)
  • Do check the competition. See what they are using for keywords and phrases. Check what sites are referencing
them, and check what they are doing to get those referrals. Reverse searching for your competition can tell you
a great deal about what your site is missing.
  • Do consider each page of your site as an entry point for a search engine, and watch the results for each page.
Use this to your advantage as a method of steering traffic and visitors back to your main page.
  • Do put in a few small specific pages targeted directly at the keywords you wish to be listed under. Make one page
of one paragraph that is highly descriptive including only your base keywords in the paragraph. Submit it to an
engine and you'd be surprised and the results - smaller is better some times...
  • Do take steps to consider heavily your Strategic Web Site Submission policy before you build and submit links
for the next page. Start by building the page around a new keyword list. You-guessed-it, use the page to reinforce
the keywords and the keywords to reinforce the page. This is still one of the best hints to up, your site presence
before you announce it to the world.
  • Do use a couple of mispelled keywords (make sure they are on your page of text though) This can be an effective
way of gathering Extra traffic just pouncing on people's spelling mistakes.
  • Do Log the visitors web site and referring URL. This is critical information for adjusting your site keywords and
phrases. Study and learn; do research on the internet for a good log analysis tool or logger program. This can do
more to help your web sight placement than anything. (side bar: notice the few intentional mis-spellings in this
doc? again, reinforce those keywords! Its a classic tip for the techniques and promotions column that can honestly
increase and generate site traffic before and after you announce your site to the world. I find I do far more keyword
and meta tag work after a page is two months old, than I did when I built the page. I usually leave 300-400
characters play room in my meta keywords just for follow up work. There be gold in that referral data!
  • DO mix it up. Consider every page on your site as a potential point of entry for visitors. Use some small widget,
solo topic, or narrow focus pages with keywords unto themselves - and also some large heavy content pages with
broad topics. With search engines constantly changing their ranking systems, one month a large content rich page
will score high, while the next month that little two paragraph "after thought" page will suddenly jump to the top of
the rankings for seemingly unknown reasons. You should be careful with this technique not to give the search
engines the appearance of spamming (don't just replicate a page and change a little here and there - keep topics
    divided)
  • Good Stuff :)
  • Put the most important information high in your site hierarchy and be sure your top pages contain links to other
    other important pages
  • Spend your energy and money making your pages as useful as possible to your target audience. The quality of your site
    is an important ranking factor
  • Use specific words (such as "spiderman's movie," or "internet jargon") in your text so your site will match these
specific queries. Use the query terms you consider most important in your page title, in the description, and in the first
paragraph of your page. Don't waste the highly important first paragraph on fluff or a seasonal message. The first
    paragraph
should make clear the main purpose of the page and the nature of its content.
  • Be sure every page of your site has an HTML title that includes your targeted query words in the title.
  • Use a meta tag with keywords to add synonyms for words you use on the page itself.
  • Use a meta tag to enter a page description.
  • Be sure your Home page has links to the major parts of your site.
  • If your graphic/image contains words on it, remember to use ALT tags as Altavista cannot read the text on a
    grahpic/image
  • Obtaining a domain name with your Keyword in it may significantly affect your score on AltaVista. Including the Keyword
in a sub-directory name or page name can also help, although not as much
  • Keyworded hyperlinks
  • Bad Stuff
  • Dont Have pages with text that is not easily read, either because it is too small or is obscured by the background
    of the page
  • Dont use pages with off-topic or excessive keywords
  • Duplication of content, either by excessive submission of the same page, submitting the same pages from multiple
domains, or submitting the same content is not recomended
  • Machine generated pages with minimal or no content who's sole purpose is to get a user to click another page
  • Dont use pages that contain only links to other pages
  • Dont use pages whose primary intent is to redirect users to another page
  • Dont use .asp pages with question (?) marks in their URL's (indicatating that the page is a script for the construction of
a page rather than just static content) are not indexed.
  • If you want visitors from search engines to experience your pages in a certain way, you should have non-frames as well
as frames versions of your page

  • Improve your link popularity! Your ranking is influenced by the link 'popularity' of your site. This is determined by how
many OTHER Web sites link to your own. Get some link back action on the go!!

  • Make sure your documents first sentence utilizes your Main Keyword if this is the one you want Google to display.
(Google tends to extract the words surrounding the first visible occurrence of the Keyword more than any other
    repetitions on the page.)
  • When viewing the source code of competing pages on Google, be sure to click on the 'Cached' link in the Google results.
This will show the exact page Google used when it indexed the page even if the Webmaster has changed their page's
    content since then.
  • Link to your doorway page from as many other pages in your site as possible and then submit all those pages.
  • When linking to something, be sure to use important keywords in the hyperlinks to maximize your results!
  • Along with using your Keyword at the top of the page, you might consider using your Keyword at least once near the
bottom of your page in the Body area. This can help convey an overall "theme" to the page and may improve your score.
  • Bad Stuff :(
  • Dont use Meta tag Description's (meta name="description") as Google creates a summary description by extracting
the words that surround the keyword being searched
  • Dont enter keywords in your meta name="keywords" section that dont appear anywhere on your site. Google requires
all the words in a query to be physically on the page to conside it a match.

  • Good Stuff :)
  • Improve your link popularity! Your ranking is influenced by the link "popularity" of your site. This is determined by
how many OTHER Web sites link to your own. The more sites that you can get to link to you, the better!
  • Lycos favors Title tags where the Keyword is NOT the first word in the Title. Make sure you use some other word as
as the first word of the Title to score better on Lycos.
  • Domains that begin with 'A' can have a slight edge over those that begin with 'B' or 'C', etc. This is a feature that only
    Lycos uses.
  • Make sure the first two hundred characters of your page do a good job of describing its contents, and make sure the
content of your site is interesting and appealing. This will help as the Lycos technology, currently run by
www.directhit.com, notes how long someone stays at your page. The longer they stay, the more important your page is
deemed to be and the higher ranking you will receive.
  • Lycos favors freshly submitted pages. Therefore, schedule your key pages to be submitted at least once per week,
but no more than once per day.
  • It is important to be listed among the category searches on Lycos. You do this by adding yourself to the Open
    Source Directory.
  • Your Title and Body area combined require 100 words or more for your site to be indexed
  • Use Keywords near the top of your Body text, and at least once near the bottom of the body. Also be sure that you've
included your keywords near the bottom of the page embedded within some hyperlink text. This can improve your score
  • Try to use the plural form of the Keyword in addition to the singular form when possible to capture more potential traffic.
(plurals are not recognized as being synonymous by Lycos)
  • Try using words that are closely synonymous with your primary Keyword. This may improve your page's relevancy by
    establishing a page "theme."
  • The ALT attribute of an IMG tag will be analyzed and included in your listing
  • Lycos gives higher priority for keywords appearing closer to each other in page text.

  • Bad Stuff :(
  • Use your main keyword as the first word in your Title.
  • Submit your page more than once per day
  • Use less than 100 words in your Title and body area combined. This will cause your page NOT to be indexed.
  • Use keywords half way down the page. or in strange places. this can and will work against you.
  • Avoid using the following characters (?, =, and $) Your page may get dropped by including these characters
  • Graphical pages are hard to index in the Lycos search
  • Lycos cannot analyze the content within your frames, but any body text in the <NOFRAMES> section will be indexed

  • Good Stuff :)
  • Since this engine (along with many others) derive at least part of their results from the Inktomi database, you should
consider taking advantage of the Inktomi paid submission service.
  • Improve your link popularity! Your ranking is influenced by the link "popularity" of your site. This is determined by how
many OTHER Web sites link to your own. The more sites that you can get to link to you, the better!
  • HotBot Inktomi favors freshly submitted pages. Therefore, schedule your key pages to be submitted at least once per
week, but no more than once per day.
  • Obtaining a domain name with your Keyword in it may significantly affect your score on HotBot. Including the Keyword
in a sub-directory name or page name can also help, although not as much.
  • Separate multiple words by dashes, underscores, or slashes in the case of sub-directories.
  • Consider purchasing a secondary domain name for this purpose if ranking well on HotBot is important to you.
  • HotBot is known to favor pages with many Keywords in the Link Text and HYPERLINK URL areas.
  • We strongly recommend that you submit to both the index and the directory for HotBot, with 95 million urls indexed,
HotBot is not a system to overlook.
  • The key elements are: Title tag, Meta Description tag, Meta keyword tag and body text, in that order.
  • If you have a frames site make sure you use the "NOFRAMES" tag and put text in those tags letting the spider know
    what your site is about.

  • Bad Stuff :(
  • Don't fall into the trap of creating dozens of "cookie-cutter" pages that are devoid of valuable content or are lacking in
    aesthetics.
  • Dont submit your keypages every day. Once a week will surfice.
  • Dont use Frames or Image Maps as Hobot does not support them.
  • The HotBot spider is not a deep level spider, so if your site contains many sub-directories, be ready to submit your top
url and the urls for the lower level directories as well.
  • Do not use hidden or tiny text because they consider this a spam technique and will penalize your page heavily
  • HotBot does not spider frames and the only way for the spider to know what is in your site is to have a "NOFRAMES"
    tag.
