He definitely is one of the finest actors and the most lovely person on earth. Always friendly and joking with his friends, he
makes everyone feel very special.
~Bea
Douglas was fantastic in Scarlet. It was my first and I was really lucky to be able to meet him afterward.
~Troy Ruth
My 15 year old daughter and I had the privilege of "discovering" SP and the amazingly wonderful Douglas Sills when we attended
the Dec. 26 evening performance. Since we live 3 1/2 hours away from NYC, our only previous exposure to SP was the outstanding
performance they gave at the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. We are so thankful that we were able to see Douglas in the show
before he moves on to other endeavors. We will be his life-long fans, and wish him well in whatever he does. Thank you, Douglas,
for sharing both your talents and your "heart" with all of us. Words cannot express the incredible joy you have added to our
lives. Thank you also for being so kind outside the stage door and for your gracious, personal reply to Eliz's letter. We will
be there at the March 7 performance to wish you well and to try to "soak it all in" so that we will never forget the "magic"
you and the rest of the cast and crew have created. God bless you all.
~Lois and Elizabeth
It's been a while since I posted here - I have now seen the show 17 times and will be going to see the show tomm. By the time
Doug leaves I will have seen the show 30 times.(all of my seats are in first row except for 2 shows -) I know some people
don't like the first row but I can't see sitting anywhere else. It makes me feel like the whole cast is just performing for me
and always makes the night more magical. What can I say about Doug - the man is truly a special person - His performance time
after time is just fantastic and no matter how many times I see him in the show I am always amazed at how talented he is and
how Broadway did not find him before this. He always has time to chat with me and everyone else who stops by after the show.
The last time I saw the show (last Tues) he even stopped to say HI before the show (he was just strolling thru the wind tunnel
to go to the stage door) I said Happy New Year and told him I was seeing the show again - (He always is so amazed how not only
I but so many of us keep coming to see the show over and over) I told him I don't take a vacation from work that this is what I
would rather do. The whole cast is just great and so friendly. I have never seen a bad performance - everyone in the cast gives
everything they have and this is the reason why not only I but many other people continue to see the show over and over again.
I know Doug's last show March 7th will be a show I will remember always (with sadness yes but also with happiness because we
have been so privileged to see him for this long) and I know I will follow his career from now on and hope someday to see him
light up Broadway again because he is definitely our Shining Star.
~Susan
Saw the show last night again and Douglas was really "on." You could see that he was "up" for this performance, giving his
lines an extra flair. The audience ate it up! After the show there were quite a number of fans. When Douglas came out, he
introduced Nan Knighton, who wrote the book and lyrics, to all of us. It was a thrill to meet her and tell her how much I enjoyed
her work, especially the revised version of the show. I asked Douglas to sign a special card I made for my sister who is
getting married he was very obliging and wrote a lovely message. My sister will love it when she sees it. One of the great
things about the show is how Douglas does it, adding little touches here and there, drawing different nuances of humor or
emotion from the script. So you never see the "same" show over and over and you are never bored. The quality and consistency
are secure, but the shadings in performance are what make "The Scarlet Pimpernel" the unique show! These "variations," if you
will, are part of the show's charm. So, if you have not seen the show: Go! And if you have, treat yourself to another "viewing."
I know this page is for Douglas, but Rachel York deserves praise too. She is utterly amazing as Marguerite. Her acting and
singing are spellbinding. And she is a really wonderful person. Mark McGrath did a fine job filling in for the vacationing
Rex Smith.
~Marc Roselli
Doug is an amazing star! His beautiful voice, great acting, and handsome physique had me love struck. even tho i am, at 16,
several years younger then he, i hope that i will have the opportunity to meet a genteleman as sincere, kind, charming,
funny, and utterly talented as Douglas Sills. It was truly an honor see and speak with him after the show, I think his presence
on Broadway has added a special honor and source of pride to the Broadway strip and the performing world. Not many leading
actors are willing to take the time to appreciate the devotion and respect of fans. Doug took the time to speak with each
person who had waited in the freezing cold to meet him and kindly spoke and joked around with every one of us. I also love the
show and the sound track of the scarlet pimpernel and my family listens to the tunes all the time. SP has truly been inspiring. Thanx!
~Lauren
I just recently saw "The Scarlet Pimpernel" for the first time and i must say that i was absolutely flawed by the production.
i have to admit that i never had any real desire to see the show as i prefer classic book type of broadway musicals and i really
thought that this show like so many would become just another tourist trap. How wrong i was!!!!! What prompted me to see the
show? well, i caught the numbers that were presented on Macy's Thanksgiving day parade and my curiosty was sparked, I also have
a friend who has seen the show way too many times to mention and i figured why not? I also heard that the show had recently been
re-vamped and was doing better then ever. As I said earlier I was totally flawed by the show, the costumes, sets, direction,
production values, performances all conspired to make this truly a real gem of the theater but there is one reason in particular
that this show really pulls together and stays the jewel that it is actor: DOUGLAS SILLS!! Douglas sills is without a doubt
the finest leading male actor on the Broadway scene today. He protrudes a charisma on stage, an energy, a comic timing that is
seen very rarely today. An absolutely goregous voice all his own, un-like so many performers today who are cookie-cutters they
all sound as if they stepped out of the same pea-pod. He is a PERFORMER in every sense of the word, a true broadway legend
in the making. And getting to meet him after the show was an absolute treat! He is as kind, charming and funny as the
character he portrays, not to mention even more strikingly handsome up close and in person! What a real shame that he didn't
win the Tony he obviously so rightfully earned especially since he more the acheved EXCELLENCE IN THE THEATER.
Don't worry Douglas i'm certain that a Tony is just around the corner!
~Peter Macchia
Wow, I've never even looked at this section of the page before! Sink me! And I even got quoted too... whaddya know about that.
Well... okay... my thoughts. I went to Broadway on Broadway '97, because I had bought tickets for Pimpernel already. And I had
bought the tickets because I'd heard Anthony Warlow was going to be cast as Sir Percy. And I had since heard otherwise, so I
wanted to check out 'this Douglas Sills guy' -- needless to say, by the time it was over I was like 'Anthony WHO?' Since then I
have seen Douglas perform as Sir Percy five times... and every single time, I fall in love with him all over again. Corny, but
true. He brings such depth of feeling and voice to Sir Percy that I could not imagine anyone else doing the role. Well yes, I
did see someone else once as a matter of fact, but there's a big difference between 'he's a good Percy' and 'he IS Percy.' And
as many others have said, he's such a dear in person as well -- even more charming!! than his character is! I must also commend
his memory: it only took him four times before he remembered my name. :) Which is good, since we're engaged. You know, more
or less. Long story. Anyway, I guess what I'm trying to say is that I have never met a sweeter, more talented, more gracious,
and yes, more handsome man in my life. Nuff said.
~Lindsay "Nelle" Ribar
SINK ME! I adore this show and cast! I think that Douglas is one of those few performers that you need to see over and
over again. I have seen Pimpernel 3 times and cannot wait to see it again. La it's become a way of life. I find that the score
is one that will stay with you when you leave the theater. The only downside to the whole thing is that Douglas will be leaving
soon. BLAST! BLAST! BLAST! I am hoping to get to see the show at least 2 more times before he leaves. I wish you nothing
but total happiness in the new year Douglas. I know that you have brought a great deal of hapiness to my life.
~Barbara
I'm thirteen and I love Broadway so much. I saw the revised production of SP, and loved it. I was just blown away by Douglas
Sills' performance. I was just stunned. I wanted to meet him at the stagedoor afterwards, but my parents wouldn't let me stay.
I decided to mail a letter to him, to the Minskoff Theater. I recieved an autographed picture and a note from him, only two
weeks after I mailed it! He is such a sweet man, and I'd like to thank him.
~Amy Lipson
I went to see "The Scarlet Pimpernel" on my birthday and it is now one of my favorite musicals, if not my favorite. I love
seeing new musicals. Douglas Sills is incredible! He has a beautiful laugh, he is handsome, and a very funny guy. I wouldn't
mind seeing Scarlet Pimpernel again, or any other show that he is in.
~Melanie
I have been a Broadway fan for years, and I have seen many shows. I must say that Douglas has the best voice, and stage presence
of any one I have seen. He is truly enjoyable to watch in The Scarlet Pimpernel. I have seen the show many times and I really
love to watch how much he enjoys performing.
~Jessica Narcisco
I got to see The Scarlet Pimpernal on Nov. 20 and thought it was one of the best shows I have seen on Broadway! The best
part was when Douglas Sills kept making jokes and trying to crack up Rex Smith and get him to laugh. Because this was the last
weekend to raise money for the BCEFA contest, Douglas asked the audience for donations and joked about the fact that Titantic
bet them the last time and that they were not going to let that happen this time because Titantic's ship sinks and their's
didn't. They had some nice things like autograph posters and playbills that you could get for a donation but the best item was
a nice black and white photograph of Sills, Smith, and York and autographed by all three in a silver pen.
~Ba
I just became a Douglas fan today. I got taken to the Scarlet Pimpernel for my birthday. I just got so blown away. I can't
believe this is Douglas' first Broadway show. He was so good that I had assumed that he had been a leading man on Broadway
for years. What talent!
~Suzanne
On Nov 5th I got to see Douglas again in the show from the first row center. These are definitely the best seats and worth
every penny. Douglas once again was fantastic - His singing was great and from the front row you can really enjoy his acting as
well - I love the front row as it seems that the show is being performed right to you. I brought roses to give to Douglas and
when he took his bow at the end I handed them to him. He really was so thrilled to receive them. After the show I waited for
him and he said he put the roses in his dressing room which made me feel really good. I also got to meet his dog Lucy who is
just as nice and friendly as her master. Douglas was just as nice as before and once again took time for pics and autographs
not only with me but with anyone else who was there. On Nov 11th I took off work to see him and Rachel York perform at the Times
Square Visitors Center - I brought my video camera and got the whole mini concert. It was great - they performed "You Are My
Home" - Rachel did "Storybook" and Douglas did "Prayer" with so much emotion that he got a standing ovation. Again he and
Rachel stayed to sign autographs and take pics. I then went to see the show again (this time from the 10th row Orch) and
Douglas was fantastic again - His voice seemed very strong (I guess the warmup at the Times Square thing helped). Rex Smith
was ill so I saw his understudy who did a respectable job. I did miss Rex singing tho. Again I waited for Douglas after the show
and even though he had an interview to go to he stopped took pics and signed autographs to all. Of course he recognized me from
earlier in the day and I said I hope he didn't mind and he said it was his pleasure and he was thrilled that I went to see the
show again. I now have tix to see the show 6 more times - 3 of them in the front row center. So I am sure I will have more to
say when I come back from these shows. Douglas deserves all his success and is definitely Broadway's shining star.
~Susan
You mean to tell me I've never posted on this?! Holy cow! Anyway, I'll just say a coupla' things about our lovely Dougie, mmkay?
1-In the words of Nelle, Doug is god with a u. 2-Doug is cute and sweet :-) 3-He kicks some major arse as Percy in both
productions of Pimpernel. Girls can't help to drool over his songs, even though they aren't nearly as seductive as, say,
Where's The Girl? 4-He's an incredible actor. 5-HE HAS NO ALTERNATE!!!! (do you believe that?! eat your heart out,
Cuccioli!) 6-He has a cute doggie named Lucy who he calls Goonie--now...how sweet is that?! 7-He encourages people to,
"Throw a twenty in," (heh, remember November 8th, guys?) That's all I gotta say.
~Farin/Lady B.
I think Douglas Sills puts on an excellent performance in The Scarlet Pimpernel. He should have won the Tony in my opinion. I
have been fortunate enough to meet with Douglas 3 times, and each time I am amazed at how down to earth and personable he
is. He is truly a gentleman, and a good-looking one at that. I can see he has a very bright future (hopefully marrying me at
some point in between!)
~Vanessa
On October 22nd I took a friend to see The Scarlet Pimpernel - he knew nothing about the show and I did not give him any information
as I wanted him to be totally surprised. I originally saw it a year ago with the original cast and was blown away so I wanted
to see how they changed it. We had 4th row seats which were wonderful - once again I was blown away. I did not know if Rex
Smith could replace Terrence Mann but I was pleasantly surprised and enjoyed his performance. I also liked Rachel York - I feel
she doesn't have the powerful voice of Christine but as it was only her 2nd week I know she will grow into the role. Now on to
the best of all - Douglas Sills - I cannot say enough great things about this man - He was sensational - Everytime he sings "Prayer"
and "She Was There" my heart breaks - I love that he does the duet with Marguerite of "You Are My Home" now. Also
his sense of humor and his comedic talent when he becomes the Fop Percy - I couldn't stop laughing. It was the best night I had
at the theatre. After the show we waited an hour for Douglas - someone came out the stage door after 20 minutes and said that
Douglas would be late (he was in a business meeting) and if you couldn't wait to give her anything you wanted him to sign.
Several people did but we were determined to wait - My friend never met Douglas but I was lucky enough to meet him when the
Bdwy stars did Broadway on Broadway. He was the only star to stay and sign autgraphs, take pics, etc. Finally Douglas came
out - There were only 7 of us by then. He first talked to 2 women who came from Europe and took pics and signed autographs.
Then it was our turn - He was just a doll - He asked our names and where we lived and how we liked the show. I told him that I
loved the new version and esp. the duet of "You Are My Home." He said did you notice the new verse and I said yes, and he said
he just did that this night - They asked him if he would put it in and he wanted to know if I liked it - Of course I told him it was
wonderful. I also said that we had originally had tickets for the Sunday before but when we saw he was not in the show, we
exchanged them for this night - He had been sick the previous week - Told us on the Saturday nite performance he came out in
his bathrobe to tell people how sorry he was not to be able to do the show - can you just imagine, oh sink me. Anyway he took
pictures and thanked us for coming and asked us to tell our friends and he was glad we had fun. We told him we would tell
everyone and that we would definitely be back. Well we just got tickets for November 5 (first row, keep still my beating heart)
so I will write back on how things go that night. I plan on taking off of work that day - There is absolutely no way I could
do any work anyway knowing I will be seeing him that night. God bless that man - He deserves every success he has.
~Susan
I got to see SP over the summer and totally loved it. I thought that Doug was so perfect for this role and the handsomest man I
had ever seen. I was so disappointed that I did not get to meet him after the performance because he does not come out between
matinee and evening performances. However, I did get to meet him at the Broadway auction in September and not only is he
gorgeous, he is so down to earth. I am a fan of his forever!!!
~Amy
I've only seen the show twice but I've become totally captivated by Douglas' performance and this show. I first saw the show in
July but didn't get to meet him after that performance. I was fortunate enough to go back for the Oct. 1 show. That performance
will go down as one of the all time greats from all involved but especially on Douglas' part because he went out of his way to do
it even though he's working so hard on the new version. On what had to be a very tiring night he still took time to meet the fans
afterward, sign autographs, and take pictures with anyone who wanted them. He was so truly gracious to all who were waiting
that it was a pleasure just to watch him with everyone. I finally did get to meet him this time even though I was struck totally
speechless by the event and all I could manage was a thank you for signing my SP window card. I also have to add here that
Terrence Mann and Christine Andreas were also wonderful to meet that night but since this is a site about Douglas Sills I've
focused my comments mainly on him. Anyways, to sum all this up, Douglas Sills impressed me with his talents on the stage but impressed
me even more off stage with his thoughtfulness towards all those he met. May his star shine brightly for many, many years to come.
~Linda
The first time I heard about Doug it was in a review that totally flamed SP but said that he made it worth seeing. Well, I love
the show too, but I have to admit he does make it worth seeing. He is able to pack so much emotion into one performance,
sometimes I wonder where he gets it all from, and boy, does that man get funny points. Not to mention he is one of the nicest
men ever to live. He's all around fantabulous! :)
~Leslee
I saw the show on 12 September...it was a religious experience...i am an enlightened human being now, enlightened and very much
in love...i didn't get to stay afterwards. My host parents said it was late and our subway ride was a long one, so we had to leave
right away...but i couldn't complain, because i ALMOST DIDN'T GET TO SEE HIM. but as the devoted fan i am, i sacrificed
my 3rd row center orchestra tickets for 1st rwo leftish mezzanine tickets (not bad still, but not nearly as close)...the tickets
say no refunds, but...you want the whole stroy? it's too long to put in here. it's on my website,
http://www.gurlpages.com/other/zephyr_faerie/index.html ...if you care to hear it! the box office lady was really nice to me.
i wish i could have met him, but seeing him was enough to last me several lifetimes!!
~Jessica
It is wonderful to know that such a fine person became an actor and had a chance to debut in such a fine musical. I grew up
watching Leslie Howard's performance on those winter afternoon broadcasts. He was wonderful. Doug Sills seems to have captured
the audacity of the role. I saw him perform on the Today Show so I planned to see the performance in NYC when I was there on
business. Instead, he took the afternoon and I saw his standby, George Dvorsky who was good. My friend saw Doug the next
night while I was working and she said he was great. So I am jealous of everyone who has seen him live. I hope this part will lead
to other parts for him so he can be fulfilled as an actor and I will have a chance to see him another day.
~Wyndy
I think that Douglas Sills is one of the most talented, kindest, gorgeous, sincere, humerous men I have ever had the pleasure of
seeing. When I saw the show today, I waited outside of the stage door to see him, and I was not disappointed. He took the time
to tell me and my friend how flattered he was that we had chosen to spend our birthdays there [at the show]. He then proceeded to
compliment me on my 40's style hat, and seemed truly sincere in it. In short, Douglas Sills is what all Broadway actors (and actors
in general) should strive to be like, and what I can't help thinking that a few of the greats of the old were like.
~Bridget "Janebabes" Hester
I have had the privilege of seeing The Scarlet Pimpernel twice. First I went by myself and almost missed my bus to the airport
but it would have been worth it. I then took my daughter back to see it for part of her graduation present and now she wants to
see it again from the front row. It is such a marvelous show and Doug's talent surpasses most actors I have seen. I am going
back again to take a group of students and can't wait for their reaction. I am thrilled Doug is staying with the show because he is
the driving force for sure. I have also given the CD as a present to friends and now they are waiting to see the show. I was
lucky enough also to see Doug as Neville in The Secret Garden five years ago.
~Holly
I've read just a few of the other fan comments, and I must say that they are like absolutely right!!!! This August me and my
sister have been to NY for our summer holiday. We already were very happy about this holiday, since it would be my first
time to fly and our first time out of Europe (we're from the Netherlands). I had read the entire Pimpernel series for like ten
times at least, so when I saw a tourist flyer about a musical SP, I was very happy indeed. I immediately talked my sister into
going, saying that since the story was so absolutely great there was no way we could go wrong with this one. The fact that we
both knew we knew the name Terrence Mann from something and it felt like good memories, we decided to go for it. We had
like the best seats I've ever had. 11th row, slam in the middle. He came on stage and I don't think I breathed for the rest of the
show. It was the very best highlight of that entire vacation. Douglas Sills is indeed the Scarlet Pimpernel himself. No one
can possibly do a better job. The fact that Chauvelin and Marguerite once had an affair indeed came as a surprise, but the
Falcon song already had been so terrific and when he started singing Where's the Girl, there was absolutely no doubt in my
mind why she would have an affair with him. I have never heard such a beautiful song and such a magnificent voice!! We
immediately decided to buy every CD that has the voice of Terrence Mann on it. Since we couldn't get enough of it, we went to
see them again 5 days later. This time Christine was singing, so we had the entire original cast. The first time we were kind of
disappointed about M. since she didn't seen able to give the part what it deserved, though she did have a splendid voice. But
Christine was absolute heaven!! Unfortunately we had to go back to the Netherlands again, but not without the CD, a t-shirt and
some great pictures!! Since then we both have had SP songs playing in our heads continuously, and we're not bored yet. So
they better still be playing next summer 'cause Douglas... Here we come!!!!
~Anita Boksem
My family and I have seen SP three times now and have tickets for another. The show is great and Douglas Sills is the reason
why. I have listened to Broadway music my entire life and I cannot think of another performance to match his. No one matches the
voice with the emotion and the personality like him. We met him after the show and he was extremely charming and friendly. How
can this be his big break after many years of trying? Are the talent scouts out there blind and deaf?
~Jim and Nancy
We have seen SP three times and hope to see many more! It is our opinion that Douglas Sills is the actor by whom all future Broadway
Males-in-a-musical will be judged by. He is without question among the finest Broadway stars to come along in 4 decades...and
more. We love you Doug!
~David & Linda Mercaldo
This past summer, I went into New York with my aunt in hopes of seeing The Lion King (but of course it was sold out). So instead,
we got tickets for The Scarlet Pimpernel. Neither of us had seen it, but my mother praised it highly. We got our tickets one hour
before the show, and sat in the center of about row 10 of the orchestra. The seats were wonderful! The Scarlet Pimpernel is
**the best** show I've ever seen! And I took my sister in the next week to see it again! Douglas Sills is fabulous! I met him
after the show, waiting behind the Minskoff. He signed my Playbill, and the tickets, and I got pictures of him (with me, too).
So he was VERY nice, and we had a conversation (rather one sided though, because he was saving his voice for the evening
performance). I am from the area where he lived! It was wonderful! He is the funniest man I have ever seen on Broadway,
and he has a great voice and is the best suited man to play the part of The Scarlet Pimpernel! And I'd like to say "Thank you!"
for this site devoted *entirely* to him! Oh stop, my pounding heart!
~Riana
I haven't seen The Scarlet Pimpernel, but just hearing Doug Sills sing on a CD is wonderful enough! His voice and personality
seem to flatter the character of "Percy." I hope that he will stay with the show for a couple of more years, at least, so I can get
the opportunity to see him perform. He is a terrific actor who seems to understand the character very well. I am ashamed that
he did not win the Tony. The only thing I can think of is that every new kid on the block has to suffer a little before they can
receive their glory! Douglas, just proceed, "Into Fire! Onward Ho!"
