One of the characters in the Team
D Birthright campaign is a cleric/thief called Raithenn. He is
a private investigator who seeks to right wrong, even if he uses
unorthodox methods. However, he is also well versed in the nature
of the Shadow Land due his many extensive travels there. This
exploration has had its affect on him, turning him his skin grey
and making him sensitive to light. For this reason, he is commonly
seen wearing a brimmed hat and a pair of darkened spectacles
(ie. sunglasses). He is a shady looking grey man in more ways than
one. He is sometimes confused for the Siren's enemy, the Dusk
Man (cf. Team D timeline 9/12/551).
Raithenn is also very good at hiding. He has the thief ability to
Hide in Shadows. He has a ring of invisibility. He also has a
Someone-Else's Problem (SEP) field which allows people to recognise
that he is present, but they don't think about who he is, pay any
attention to him or remember his presence once they have gone. He
is "someone-else's problem".
Raithenn likes to try and remain unknown to the general public. He
doesn't want to gain notoriety. The book he has written on the
Shadow Lands was written in a nom de plume. The SEP field helps him
be forgotten.
However, eventually word does get around about a grey person being
at the scene of many crimes. Rumours start, histories are twisted
and the bards start to work them into their works. Over time, every
hero becomes part of a legend, even if it isn't totally
accurate. This song is evidence of that. Raithenn's companion, the
Druid Brokk, had heard bits of the song in various musical pieces.
When he finally heard one single Anuirean song that drew them all
together, he memorised the lyrics of "The Grey Man".
He is a man of no concern.
You would pass him by
And know not what he might have done
For he is far too sly
To stand out in amongst a crowd,
To get in people's way.
The one behind many a deed.
He is the man in grey.
Grey Man, where'd you hide?
Where could you be?
In times of fear
I see you near
Then you are gone from me.
A chief had lost his little girl
Amongst the desert sand.
The man in grey appeared with her
And asked for cash in hand.
Once paid the man just disappeared.
The chief could smell a fake.
The next day the illusion fell.
The girl became a snake.
Grey Man, where'd you hide?
Where could you be?
In times of fear
I see you near
Then you are gone from me.
Silence filled a cleric's lodge.
Not a prayer was said.
The priests deceased, bereft of life.
The rats were being fed.
Up on the wall, a flash of grey
Was all the townguard saw.
For when they looked, the movement stopped
And he was seen no more.
Grey Man, where'd you hide?
Where could you be?
In times of fear
I see you near
Then you are gone from me.
From Shadowlands, a bone army
Struck a city's wall.
Beyond the force, defenders saw
A grey one in control.
A ball of light engulfed them all.
Both sides soon were killed.
But those who searched found not a trace
Of the Grey Man on the field.
Grey Man, where'd you hide?
Where could you be?
In times of fear
I see you near
Then you are gone from me.
