other greats

There are plenty of other great fighting games besides KOF, and this section lists those fighters that I think are definitely worth a look. Not in any particular order of preference, of course.

Garou: Mark of the Wolves

System(s): NeoGeo, Sega Dreamcast
Developer: SNK
Remember SNK's first popular fighting series, Fatal Fury? This is the new-generation sequel to it. This game pushed the NeoGeo hardware to the limit, with fluid animation and great music. The gameplay system is also new and refreshing, very different from other SNK stalwarts like KOF. This is a must play for all aspiring fighting game players!

Capcom vs. SNK 2

System(s): Sega Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameCube, Microsoft XBox
Developer: Capcom
The two greatest fighting game producers come together to produce a magnificent crossover game! This game has over 40 characters from both SNK (KOF, Fatal Fury, Art of Fighting, Samurai Shodown, Last Blade) and Capcom (Street Fighter, Rival Schools, Darkstalkers, Final Fight) games, and six unique fighting "grooves" you can use to alter your playing style. Throw in a revamped Ratio mode, as well as classic one-on-one and three-on-three fighting modes, and you have a truly monumental fighting game.

Guilty Gear X

System(s): Sega Dreamcast, Sony PlayStation 2, Nintendo GameBoy Advance, PC
Developer: Arc System Works
People thought that 2D fighters had hit the proverbial brick wall. Then a group of ex-SNK designers came out with Guilty Gear X. The high resolution anime-style 2D sprites and backgrounds will have your eyes popping out. The gameplay is no slouch either, and is accessible to newbies while being difficult to master. This game also sports some of the most unique characters designs as well as a hard rockin' soundtrack. One of the best fighters out there, no question about it.

Street Fighter Alpha 3

System(s): Sony PlayStation, Sega Dreamcast, Nintendo GameBoy Advance
Developer: Capcom
I consider this the pinnacle of the Street Fighter series (minus SF3 because I haven't actually played it yet), with loads of characters (including plenty of secret ones) and deep, challenging gameplay. People complain that the V-ism is too good compared to the other two, though. No matter, SFA3 is a good choice for anyone looking to get into fighting games.

Virtua Fighter 4

System(s): Sony PlayStation 2
Developer: Sega
The only 3D fighter that I consider good. The engine is incredibly deep, and the game takes a looong time to master. Plus, the single player game is actually challenging unlike some other 3D fighters *cough*DeadorAlive3*cough* and the "Kumite" mode will keep you engaged for ages. A must-buy for any PS2 owner.

The Last Blade 2

System(s): NeoGeo, Sega Dreamcast
Developer: SNK
SNK made this game in homage to the anime Rurouni Kenshin. The result is a fantastic swordplay game that is incredibly deep. With three gameplay styles (Power, Speed and EX) and over 14 characters, you'll be looking at a long time spent with Last Blade 2. The graphics are also beautiful, with some of the best animation and art seen on the NeoGeo. If you haven't played this game, you must die (Just kidding).
