One of the biggest, and often neglected truths in game design is that a game doesn't need to look state-of-the-art to be a great experience. Think of fighting games, and for most the gut response is usually "Street Fighter" or "Tekken" because those games leave a visual impact. However, I think "King of Fighters" - an amazing game series by SNK that still leaves me stunned with its degree of immersiveness. It may not look particularly flashy, but it provides a deep gameplay experience, and for that I give it the thumbs up. Some basic KOF info is located on this site, such as storyline information and character bios, but hopefully I can get some basic gameplay info up here too.
