What's it about, and what's so great about it?

The Vision of Escaflowne (pronounced Ess-ka-flown-ay) is the story of a high school girl, Kanzaki Hitomi, who gets transported to another world, where the Earth and Moon can be seen in the sky. There she finds herself in the midst of a huge conflict that seems set to change the fate of that world, Gaea.

Escaflowne is definitely not your run-of-the-mill fantasy anime. There are mecha fights (very impressively animated, I must say), lots of science-fiction type bits here and there as well as romance, tragedy and redemption. All I can say is...wow. This series redefines the word "epic." There are absolutely NO filler episodes, and as a result, the story is enthralling from start to finish. The character development is superb, as well as the character designs themselves.

The animation is good, although the drawing style is a bit too "cute," if you know what I mean. Watching the dragon in episode 1 was enough to make me pumped about the rest of the series' graphical quality, and what do you know, I wasn't disappointed.

Escaflowne is a fantastic anime with a brilliant story, realistic characters and great action and animation. Get the DVDs (out now) or a VCD set. You won't regret it.
