| Brief History: In 1997 this car was purchased in pretty rough shape. It had leaks from everywhere, and almost nothing worked. The Tachometer didn't work, and we had to prop the hood up with a stick because the hood shock was gone. Up until May of 2001 we have been doing matinence, replacing and upgrading such things as the A/C system which is now the new R-12 instead of the old R-134. The water pump, belts, hoses, radiator, tie rods, brakes, lights, and a list of other things have been replaced with stock BMW equiptment. This summer I decided, because of the rough shape of the car it wouldn't be worth while to sell it, so I made efforts to turn this Bimmer Econo-Box into an asphalt eatin', rubber burnin', hard cornerin' beast. So this summer has been a suspension related summer. The entire suspension has been redone, new performance brakes with fire engine red paint on the calipers, new control arms, tie rods, bushings etc. you name it and its been redone. It was lowered an average of 3.5 inches from stock, with wheels that are 16 inch instead of 14 inch, and low profile 225/45/16 Kumho Exsta's repalced the stock 195/60/14 tires. The body is in perfect condition, and will soon have the large aluminum bumpers replaced with fiberglass racing bumpers with a from air dam and rear apron. As far as trick body work goes, I'd like to shave the door handles, having them open by remote, do some custom louver work on the hood, in the future put on flared fenders in the rear (ferarri style--smooth not boxy), 17x 13 inch rims in the rear with 17 x 8's in the front, with GT style front fender flares with the side slits to allow better air flow through the engine compartment, and a small lip spoiler on the trunk. It handles like a dream, with the Bilstien Sport shocks in front and rear, with bavarian autosport lowering springs, and every where I go people look at this car in amazement. Why is it so hard to believe that I would trick out an 80's econo box? Lack of power? Well in the summer of 2003 this peppy little bimmer is going to have it's stock 2.7 inline 6 that cranks out 124 horsies replaced. But for now, it moves fast enough to embarass many Honda's, can spin its wheels to your heart's desire, and looks good enough to attract looks from every one's girlfriend. |
