History:

The only foundationhorse known or recorded for the American Paint Horse is a sorrel overo, brought to the Americas in 1519. It bred with the native mustangs producing the first "pinto" (spanish for "pretty" or "painted) herds. In the 1800's the Comanche and other tribes found value in these horses. Not only did they admire their wild color, but they found them to be brave horses as well.
The breed was preserved through the years. The Pinto Horse Association was formed, and later the American Paint Stock Horse Association marked an official name for a new breed of horse. The registry slowly grew, then joined up with, and gained the name of the American Paint Horse Association in 1965.

The Paint Today:

The paint today carries all or most of the physical (non-color) traits of the American Quarter Horse. There are a number of unregistered Paints that live quiet lives as trail mounts and learning buddies. To be registered, the horse must have APHA, AQHA, or Jockey club registered parents. They must have the minimum amount of white allowed(more info in links below), and can have any other equine color with the white. The three common patterns are overp("oh-vair-oh"), tobiano, (toe-be-an-oh"), and tovero ("to-vair-oh"). Although the horses are prefered to be colored, there are some other Paints that have little or no markings at all, refered to as breeding stock paints. These horses are commonly cremello or perlino.

Paint Models:

Be careful before you dub that new pinto model a "Paint". There are some guidelines with registering a real Paint horse that can be helpful with accurately protraying the breed. There are some helpful links below that will show my point.
