SNA MEMBERSHIP

You probably want to know the who's, what's, when's, why's, & how much's of the Student Nurse Association. Let us try to answer some of your questions.

What is the Student Nurse Association?

The SNA is one of the campus' leading student organizations.  The SNA is involved in community service & volunteer work & helps to address student issues related to the rigors of nursing school.  Many of the SNA programs & activities, such as the student mentoring program, are designed to offer support & encouragement to nursing students.

Who can join SNA?

Membership in SNA is limited to declared nursing majors of SIUE. This year, for the first time, students may join SNA as early as semester 3. Students in their third semester may wonder how they can participate in some of the SNA activities without the knowledge base needed for certain activities (such as blood pressure screenings, teaching BSE & TSE, etc).  To address that concern, let us just say that many of the volunteer activities in which SNA is involved do not require you to have broad nursing knowledge at this time, & we feel that the presence of semester 3 students will be beneficial, both to the students & our organization as a whole.

Why should I join SNA?

There are many reasons why joining the SNA is the right thing for you.  Membership allows you to form friendships with other student nurses, gets you involved in the service to your fellow man, gives you the opportunity to use your knowledge to teach & benefit others & puts you in the position to learn from others. Volunteer hours through SNA will be logged on your school transcript through Kimmel Leadership Center, and may also fulfill requirements in some classes.  Membership in SNA is something you can put on your resume & scholarship applications as well.

In addition to the "work" that SNA does, the SNA also has fun events exclusively for members.. You'll also get discounts on SNA/SIUE School of Nursing merchandise, which includes things like jackets, t-shirts, polo-type shirts (which you may wear for Community Health Nursing in Semester 7), etc.

So, what's it going to cost me?

The fee for membership in SNA is $10 for the academic year.  Membership fees & other monies collected through fundraising activities are used to pay for various SNA activities and are also used for donations made to charitable organizations.

I've decide I want to join SNA! How do I do that?

First, let us say, great! We're glad to have you. You can join SNA by attending one of our membership days to be held in September. If you can't make those days, don't worry! You can also attend a meeting of the SNA & join at that time. If all else fails, just contact one of the officers, & we'll get you your membership card & fill you in on any details.
