Memory It !

An ePods can be upgraded to an ePods32 by adding a 100K resistor to R84, adding twelve 0.10uF capacitors to the empty capacitor pads and adding memory chips to the empty memory pads.  See the Parts page for information on memory compatibility.

Note: These instructions assume that you have experience soldering SMD components.  I will try to add a section about soldering SMD components someday.  For now, the best advice I can give is practice on something you don't care about before you try it on your ePods and use plenty of flux.  Also check out this site.

1)  Back up any data that you want to keep.  Follow the directions for opening the case.

2)  Solder the 0.1 uF capacitor to C119 through C126, C737, C738, C741 and C742.

3)  Solder the 100K resistor to R84.

4)  Place the memory chip in place.  Make sure pin # 1 is in the correct position.  Pin # 1 is marked with a dot.

5)  Solder pin # 1.  Line up the chip and solder pin # 17.  If the chip is not exactly in position, heat up pin #1 and reposition.  Alternate between pins # 1 and # 17 until the chip is perfectly aligned.

6)  Check to see that pin # 1 is in the correct position.

7)  Check pin # 1 one more time.  As you may of guessed by now, I screwed this up once ;-).

8)  Solder the remainder of the pins

9)  Clean the board with flux remover.  Alcohol or acetone will work also.  Be sure to test any new solvent on a small section of the board before you do the entire area.   It would be a shame to melt the board now that you are almost done.

10)  Inspect your work.  Look for solder bridges or gaps on the pins.  If you have a scanner, scan the board at 1200 dpi or higher.  The resulting picture will really let you see the quality of your work.

11)  Test it.  If all goes well you will see 32 Mb of RAM under System Properties.
