Smiths Shoes -- Woodside

Why we won't
sell shoes online

Footwear simply must fit correctly and be
suitable for the task intended.

Sales of the type mentioned above
are not acceptable because;

1. There is no standard shoe size.

2. Far to often a poor choice of footwear is
made e.g. a running shoe used for a court sport.

3. Not only the length and width of the foot are
important - consideration must be given to the
shape (last) e.g. instep, arch, bunions etc.

4. The best quality, and therefore usually the
most expensive, shoe should be for all day use,
not the rarely used dress shoe.

5. Consideration should be given to wear versus
comfort -price is a very poor indicator of the
likely wear rate.

6. Correct fitting of footwear is unlikely to be
achieved by the customer (after all, we're all
expert at something).

7. All footwear should be guaranteed against
faults and easily and inexpensively
returned/replaced.

8. No-one has two identical feet.

9. Footwear is, what we call, a critical fit item.
Unlike trousers, shirts and the like, simple
alterations to accommodate fit problems are
often not possible.

For these and other reasons we recommend that
you consult your local shoe store for your
footwear purchase.

A competent
salesperson will;

1. ideally not measure your feet, as with the size
variations between makes and styles this
accomplishes little.

2. they will discuss what it is you plan to use the
shoes for.

3. they will give you options over a wide price
spectrum.

4. they will explain the benefits and
disadvantages of every shoe.

6. they will not only show expensive shoes.

5. they will suggest or recommend, never dictate.

7. they will respect your budget.

8. understand that shoes are not a daily purchase.

9. above all, they will listen to you.

We don't believe the above considerations
can be met on a "remote" basis and are
pleased to see many other Footwear retailers
agree with us.
We recommend care in purchasing footwear
other than in person and always trying on
both shoes, both sitting and standing.
