Because of the Hydrocephalus we measured Tessa's head daily for
increased
size due to fluid build up.
When Tessa was only 9 days old we
noticed she
seemed very lethargic.
She wouldn't wake up to eat even.
Nathan and I
measured her head and it had gone up 1 cent. with in a day's
time.
We
immediately took her to Primary Children's Hospital emergency
room.
She was
then admitted and surgery was scheduled for a shunt the
following day.
Nathan went home that night to care for Ethan
and I stayed for
the next 3
days by my baby's side.
The next morning we met with the
Pediatric
Neurosurgeon, Dr. Walker to go over the procedure.
It seemed
simple enough
but still broke my heart to put my little angel through it.
The
anathesiologist then came to take Tessa and Nathan and I waited
with heavy
hearts for her to return.
We met Tessa in her room only a
couple of hours
later.
She was still sedated.
Her head was swollen with
stitches and red
with betedine.
It was very difficult for me to see her like
that.
With in
the first day she became an entirely different baby that I had
known.
She
became more alert than I had ever seen.
Curiously looking
around and eating
like a little piglet.
The next day I was able to bath her and
the following
day I took her home.
Since then Tessa has not had any problems
with her
shunt.
It is a relief now that it is over to not have to worry
from day to
day when and if she will need a shunt.
