PUNCHES

Basically, there are 3 different types of punches in Muay Thai which can be directed in a horizontally linear, horizontally circular, or vertically circular fashion. The circular punches can be directed in either narrow or wide arcs. The Thai style punches can be compared with that of ENGLISH BOXING both of which contains the CROSS, HOOK, JAB, SWING, and UPPERCUT. The Thai style JAB is, sometimes, delivered with full power from the turning of the hips followed by body. Unlike most other martial arts, the shoulder of the attacking arm is usually lifted in front of the face in order to protect the philtrum, jaw, chin, and cheek bone while the other arm is raised in a defensive position. The main target is the head of the opponent instead of the body so as to avoid being hit by an elbow and/or knee strike, however, the body can become a target. Uppercuts can be delivered from both arms simultaneously striking the chin or abdominal area, but it is rarely used since neither arm is available for defensive purposes. Remember that every punch (with exception to the DOUBLE UPPERCUT) is delivered with the turning of the hips followed by body.
